Sorrow Plagues - Homecoming (2017)

Band: Sorrow Plagues
Album title: Homecoming
Release date: 27 May 2017
Label: Self-Released

Sorrow Plagues, the UK based band, a brainchild of musician David Lovejoy, self-released the sophomore album Homecoming. This project was born in 2014 and after three EP's and three singles, their first eponymous album was released in 2016. From the beginning, Sorrow Plagues make emotionally rich songs that retain the black metal aura but incorporating various other elements, most notable are from post-rock, blackgaze and post-metal, hugely influenced by early Alcest, Deafheaven and Woods Of Desolation. Far from being aggressive, even though there are screaming and bitter vocals, strong blastbeats, Sorrow Plagues focus on an incredible moody and warmth personality.

Cult Of Erinyes - Tiberivs (2017)

Band: Cult Of Erinyes
Album title: Tiberivs
Release date: 27th April 2017
Label: Code666

The Belgian act Cult Of Erinyes has been on the metal scene since 2009. With their previous two EP's and a full-length album, the band has always shown its strength and talent in a passionate way in a quest for deep research of human nature and its many psychological facets that lead to often hateful and questionable behaviors. This is a black metal album with many atmospheric moments, but it is not a progressive black metal, nor it's a typical atmospheric black metal thing. There is a lot of brutality present, the old school vibe is there in a sweeping, but polished, well filtered way and the quieter and more atmospheric parts blend perfectly into all the whole soundscape, creating it even more audacious.

Skinner Box - Alpha Waves (2017)

Band: Skinner Box
Album title: Alpha Waves
Release date: 27 April 2017
Label: Self-Released

Skinner Box did an album that is hardly to be believed that is only their debut. Everything is almost perfect, the sound is rich, it has a big replay value, it's not just another generic rock album, it has depth, it has soul and it simply shines of creativity. The songs are very dynamic, absolutely not repetitive, with plenty of soul melting melodies, you can find some true rocking ones, some playful, danceable popy rhythms and sparkling lines, a couple of highly emotional tunes, but all of them are bent in some kind of a melancholic veil. Considering that almost everything was done in self-production is just another plus that shows that we have to deal here with matured, devoted and professional musicians who perfectly know what they are doing. Skinner Box are a band that needs attention from everyone who is into dark alternative rock music!

Mils - We Fight/We Love [EP] (2017)

Band: Mils
Album title: We Fight/We Love [EP]
Release date: 17 May 2017
Label: Self-Released

Not so many bands that are active today have such power and such talent to create music that almost transcends borders of many genres, neither it's difficult to find such a powerful sound that has the tendency to remain stuck in your head for a very long time like it's in the case of French combo Mils. Mils have some kind of magic in their sound, often you won't know if you should be headbanging when they strike with heavy hitting parts or dancing around when they're flirting with 80s vibes. Nevertheless, Mils made a stunning return with this EP, it's an absolute must and believe me that you're missing a lot if you won't discover this so very intriguing band.

Dead Melodies - Legends Of The Wood (2017)

Band: Dead Melodies
Album title: Legends Of The Wood
Release date: 16 May 2017
Label: Cryo Chamber

Dead melodies is a new artist and these soundscapes are pushed forward by one man: Tom Moore who has a few fairly unknown albums scattered in his bandcamp. The melodies within these soundscapes fit perfectly toward these memories of this place you once inhabited. Heavy bass, gorgeous field recordings, and drones of the highest order really make me think this artist will be one to remember for years to come. These are some heavily processed and high quality field recordings, drones heavy enough to crush anyone’s good spirit, and a story that really makes this album special. Light and dark balance out very well and lead you into intriguing old legends worth looking into. You’re left with these questions: are you ever really alone in nature? Are the legends of the black forests true? Are forests really alive?
