Album of the month - June 2017

Artist: God Body Disconnect
Album title: Sleeper's Fate
Release date: 27 June 2017
Label: Cryo Chamber

Is this the world you know? Or is it only in your head, are you merely dreaming awake? These are the types of questions that come to mind when listening to the new album from God Body Disconnect; Sleeper's Fate. Ethereal guitar, carefully mixed field recordings and subtle undertones really put you into a story worth experiencing. Tracks like "Reservoir Dreamer" bring forth a very introspective atmosphere with a warm atmosphere as if being underwater, which the field recordings help paint a picture. Where the void between life and death occurs, the keeper of keys unlocks the gates to what you hold inside, your future self and your past self. An orchestral melody begins to play out your fate, day beckons to night, left in the dream realm reliving your past and wishing you did more with your life, wishing there was something you could of done to stop what you believe to be your coming death. Distant sounds of voices pierce the now foggy soundscape, sounds of your past self from your childhood, when things were so much easier. Post-rock influences, large cinematic atmospheres, surreal field recordings and bass driven melodies that slowly build, make this album truly special and quite the journey.

Album of the month - April 2017

Band: Ulver
Album title: The Assassination Of Julius Caesar
Release date: 7 April 2017
Label: House of Mythology

Some bands or artists are simply meant to push the borders forward. The evershifting and experimental band Ulver has showed us this so many times, and while waiting for every their new album fans are in kind of a sweet distress and anticipation of what they'll get. Introducing more and more electronics, industrial and ambient elements, the band became one of the most respected and articulated when it comes either to find new sonorities or processing the well established styles. The Assassination Of Julius Caesar is in the words by band an album that they were longing to do for many years, to delve into the music of their childhood. On the first glance it seems that this is just another retro wave or something album, but in reality it's far from there, it's an highly aesthetic album of clearly defined sound that simply sweeps away with almost every single retro wave or 80s revivalist pop album released lately. Ulver while looking back they created something stunningly immersive and coherent, something so very eclectic, spellbinding and evocative. The Assassination Of Julius Caesar, Ulver's thirteenth album, is a majestical, lets say dark pop album, which reinvents the term "pop" and adds some completely new terms to it. Each track offers a different journey which in the end reunites in a contemplative world of utter romance and cultural self-cleansing sonic unity. There are no bordes, there are no rules, it's simply the sound of a creative machine named Ulver.

Album of the month - February 2017

Band: Elegi
Album Title: Bånsull
Release date: 10 February 2017
Label: Dronarivm

Elegi is no stranger to the dark ambient scene. Since the debut, Sistereis in 2007 on Miasmah Records, Elegi has been one of the front runners in the dark ambient scene. Yet, much like Dahlia's Tear, Elegi, for whatever reason, continues to fall beneath the radar of the greater dark ambient community. Lauded among fellow musicians, yet generally lost over the years to listeners. Elegi has an amazingly unique take on dark ambient, which could be part of why their music has been overlooked. Hard to pin down, it could really be considered more of an experimental album than most others in the genre. Elegi works in the fashion of more recent artists like Flowers For Bodysnatchers or EnmartaElegi incorporates a multitude of instruments and sound sculpting to produce a work which is at once bold and engaging, yet simultaneously subtle and relaxing. Bånsull is true to the form of Elegi. There hasn't been a lot of change, stylistically. There is never a moment on Bånsull in which Elegi won't keep the listener fully entertained and engaged. Yet, the overall sound is so subtle that it can be used equally well as a background soundscape, for those times when deep thought or conversation would be interrupted by most music. It is an absolute pleasure to finally hear another album by this amazingly talented musician.

Album of the month - December 2016

Band: Klimt 1918
Album title: Sentimentale Jugend
Release date: 2 December 2016
Label: Prophecy Productions

Eight years after their seminal album, Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation), the Italian masters of indie/atmospheric rock return with an epochal epic double album named Sentimentale Jugend. Klimt 1918 on this new masterpiece stay loyal to the sound they achived on their previous album and even before on Dopoguerra, but yet the sound feels even more melancholic, and at the same time Klimt 1918 brings forth in their songs kind of soothing warmth and embraces with staggering comfort. All of the songs are based on the best of what post-rock and shoegaze can offer, but at the same time is alternating the energetic and dense indie rock with wistful and full of atmosphere melancholic rock, new wave, gothic, even doom and early pop rhythms from 50s and 60s. It's obvious that almost in every single song Klimt 1918 try to reach some kind of a climax and they do it with perfection. This always rich sound is absolutely well conducted, it has unimaginable depth, all of the tracks are compact enough to offer an otherworldy sonic experience. Sentimentale Jugend is pure sonic satisfaction for everyone who is searching for something more in his music, whether be a special atmosphere, emotion, energy, special melody,... soul,... or anything that makes a difference between flat and deep music.

Album of the month - October 2016

Band: NU:N
Album title: Naked Until Noema
Release date: 31 October 2016
Label: Black Genesis Records

After their rather mellow debut, Nothing Unveils Nothing, but still an album that reached almost a cult status among the followers of the genre, the Portuguese trio NU:N returns in such a great style with their sophomore full-lenght, its name is Naked Until Noema. This new album is in one word - transcedental! It perfectly captures the pivotal essence of goth rock, it's dark, mythical, obscure and while listening to it transcends time, space and even perception. Francisco, T.M. and Pedro have composed eleven diverse tracks that are so very haunting and captivating at the same time that you'll most likely not even notice when those 56 minutes of playing time go by. Naked Until Noema is a clear statement that borders inside this rather narrow genre can be crossed, expanded and overthrown, but still remaining goth in its primal essence. The Portuguese trio emerges in a new proportion of sound and writting exploration bringing them closer to themselves, and thus invites every dark soul out there to join them on this journey full of deviations and variations, where different ambiances, dark soundscapes, from typical gothic rock to almost industrial segments, ritualistic drama, dark theatre and occasional strange but so appealing, almost with kind of exotic Arabic scent enriched melodies, will keep the listener hooked for quite some time.

Album of the month - August 2016

Band: Darkher
Album title: Realms
Release date: 19 August 2016
Label: Prophecy Productions

Darkher's music is one of those captivating, highly atmospheric, unpretentiously dark and absolutely emotive sonic creations meant to feed your spirit. Jayn's songs are simply mesmerizing, beautiful, fragile, but at the same time there's present some kind of horror, intense veil of darkness and huge amount of almost raw power brought to the surface by stormy wall of guitar sound. Now, the debut full-lenght album Realms, impressively proves that the fire of great expectations raised by the debut EP and by some other songs that Darkher released before and after that, was more than justified. Realms can bring into listeners senses many different states of emotion, from dreadful angst, horror and fear, to immense beauty and calmness of mind, it's a glimmering of hope for the lost ones, but it can be as well a manace for others. It brings warmth when needed, but as well it glazes with freezing icing over your body. Darkher made a truly transcedental album that can't be really compared to anything done before, it's a sonic journey for your mind and soul, taking the listener into darkness filled with ever changing reflections of water. The sound of Darkher is veined by both an unsettling atmosphere of encroaching dread and a deep, otherworldly confidence. This is a walk through changeably stormy weather, most of the time it's cruel, but there are traces of sun and on the distant horizon you can see clearness.

Album of the month - June 2016

Band: Apocryphos
Album title: Stone Speak
Release date: 28 June 2016
Label: Cryo Chamber

Apocryphos latest album Stone Speak shows the constant evolution and honing of Kozletsky's techniques coming to its full realization. Stone Speak is Robert C. Kozletsky's most ambitious album to date, with seemingly everything he has learned through all his varied projects coming together to make one magnum opus. Stone Speak brings together the technical precision of Apocryphos' production techniques with the haunted and extremely organic field recordings collected throughout ghost towns in his local Pennsylvania region. Bold use of guitar drone and vocal manipulation bring this album together as something equally familiar and exotic. All this is given the Cryo Chamber treatment, featuring the usual Simon Heath mastering and one of Cryo Chamber's most reflective album covers to date. Kozletsky proves once again that his mark on the dark ambient genre will not be soon forgotten, and he has added an instant classic to an already impressive portfolio. The details are filled out with whispered vocals, guitar drones, field recordings of human movement, groans of some unholy spirits, all come together in a glorious blend of darkness. Listening to this at a high volume, with the mind thoroughly relaxed, all sorts of emotions come forth. No gimmicks or theatrics are used here, giving this album an extremely high replay value. Stone Speak is a must have for any dark ambient fan!

Album of the month - April 2016

Band: The Foreshadowing
Album title: Seven Heads Ten Horns
Release date: 22 April 2016
Label: Cyclone Empire

Seven Heads Ten Horns deals with the decline of Europe that foreshadows its coming fall, a view on life nowadays consequent to the failure of United Europe. The topics have biblical references (the collapse of the Tower of Babel, the scarlet woman with seven heads and ten horns arising from the sea, the mother of prostitutes, etc). In a word a great theme for this kind of music and not only, a handy thematics for a deeper deliberation about the things that happen around us. Seven Heads Ten Horns is an album that needs to be heard in one spin, from the start until the very last note, because it offers so very much and tells the story in such a picturesque way full of emotions and darkness, yet leading unto dreamlike universe. It's a fluid album with so many hidden things, many layers that slowly unveil to the listener with each new listen. The sound is so very dense, rich, moody, hypnotizing and empowering, sometimes almost cinematic, it's another level of gothic doom metal, with many alloys, either from classical music, post-rock, gothic rock, traditional heavy metal, martial, medieval, sacral and oriental music. It has that typical mediteranean scent that enriched their sound already in the past, in addition to all that it's also top notch produced, mixed and mastered. Seven Heads Ten Horns is not only a masterpiece, it's a cult!

Album of the month - February 2016

Band: Todtgelichter
Album title: Rooms
Release date: 26 February 2016
Label: Supreme Chaos Records

Todtgelichter with this album are on a mission to take the throne of avantgarde metal. Rooms is one of the most elaborated albums this band did so far, it's dark enough, it embraces with kind of shifts between coldness and warmth. Rooms is in its basis an extreme metal album and tracks like the multicoloured opener "Ghost" or "Schrein", already in the beginning show that this is nothing but a true sonic adventure. While they stick loyal to their formula of a minimalistic cover artwork and "one word" album title, music is far away from that, it has so many different elements, constant changes from one mood into another, it's multi layered, rich, yet melodic and atmospheric, with quite a lot of melancholy and almost theatrical grips. From track to track you'll be feeling just like walking from one room into another. The smell of their early black metal days is back again here and there, but what's most surprising is the implement of a vintage 70s psychedelic scent thanks to new compositional techniques and most of all to use of church organ which when used creates highly evocative, almost occultistic ambiance. The new offering from this band is again one very bold release, worth the name Todtgelichter, who are without any doubt one of rare bands that is not afraid to do original things.

Secrets Of The Moon never repeated what they did before and Sun is without doubt band's boldest and most intense album to date, while black metal is here more as a dogma, the post-metal, dark metal, progressive metal, gothic, doom and atmospheric metal took the lead. Songs are much more compact and structured than before, vocals are much more varied and almost clean all over, yet still keeping a high dose of aggression. There's such an accurate songwriting, perfect performance and unbeliveable attention to every detail. Strong bass lines, sometimes echoing in the back, technical and powerful drumming, occasionally rich ambiental keys, everything offering one of a kind listening experience for all those who ever embraced bands and acts such as early era EverEve, Sentenced, Darkseed, Killing Joke, Agrypnie, Todtgelichter, Tiamat, Vulture Industries, even Alice In Chains and much more associations can be found in here, while still being able to mantain their own character thanks to their great musicianship and artistic vision. Long live Secrets Of The Moon, metal scene needs bands like you are!

Sovran is a proof that the combination of gothic metal and doom metal works out perfectly if you have top notch musicians performing and composing it. While the pace of the album is a bit slower and not so direct like on some of their previous albums, the whole gloomy atmosphere is outstanding, songs are catchy, flowing, dramatic and absolutely racked by melancholy. Most of the melodies are stunningly captivating, guitar sound is gentle and heavy at the same time, often we hear those typical slowly gliding evocative trademark Draconian lines and riffs which brings tears in the eye, the rhythmic line is crushing, just right to give that necessary dose of turbulent doom metal and slight aggression into these compositions. The multidimensional ambiance gets often fulfilled with obscure gothy symphonic synths which give to the songs such an unimaginable depth and rich sound. Sovran is an absolute masterpiece within the genre, it might compete only with their albums like is before mentioned Turning Season Within or Arcane Rain Fell. Now the band is walking on higher grounds and are near to conquering the throne of gothic/doom metal genre. Sovran is a strong candidate for album of the year 2015. A must!!!

Chelsea Wolfe has come a very long way from her days of only taking the stage in a black veil. She has slowly creeped out of her darkness, not to enter the light but to share her darkness with the rest of the world. Chelsea Wolfe is part of the beginning of a new wave of darkness in music and art we haven't seen for many years, if ever on its scale. Her music like her career has been a slow brooding drum beat arising from the darkness to show us something of true beauty. Abyss takes no prisoners. It begins with a monumental track full of industrial guitars, electronics, and hammering drum beats. "Carrion Flowers" could stand up against the best of Nine Inch Nails' collection. Chelsea whispers to you over dark noises and soundscapes and then kicks into full gear showing the band's love for doom metal along the way. Chelsea Wolfe has presented here an album with great intensity. There is never a dull moment and the band fits perfectly to her ghostly vocals. The Abyss is where Chelsea Wolfe is the most comfortable and we hear on this album a true vision of what it is like in that darkness. There are many memorable tracks here and they will stay interesting for many replays. Great production value matched with a raw beauty and intensity make for a masterpiece.

Shards Of Silver Fade is an otherwordly musical journey that will take your mind into the places you can't even imagine. Once the first notes begin to play the whole new world opens up, a travel through ancient world, pagan lands, middle earth, witnessing heroic battles, going into galaxies unknown, yet it makes you find the place in the universe, being given a spiritual connection with everything around you, making you feel alive and very much part of the existence around you. There's so much of emotion, anger, melancholy, even nostalgia, everything wrapped in the elegant and touchy soundscape. It's epic by all means, the majestic cinematic ambiances are so vivid, still the main body leans to atmospheric black metal. But don't be misguided by that, as the music offers much more, a lot of soaring symphonic passages, doom metal, even some folk, gothic, dark wave, neoclassical, metalgaze, spacious electronics and dark ambient elements are present there. Shards Of Silver Fade deserves the full attention from the listener and it's not that difficult to reach it as there's so much going on, yet everything is so smoothly connected into one mesmerizing entirety which will reveal all of its secrets after a couple of consequent listen. Esoteric and fascinating, captivating dark, melancholic and meditative, a true cosmic work of art and will be a disgrace if you miss it.

While we are waiting for the next release from the mighty symphonic metallers Therion, which should be as promised a proper opera metal album and that could take still quite some time to see the light of the world, the main man and composer Christofer Johnsson suprises with something truly special, a new band named Luciferian Light Orchestra. It stands for everything that Christofer composed throughout the years and somehow didn't fit on any of the Therion albums, it might have been too vintage sounding, maybe too dark and occult, not so symphonic, even too popy in some regards, but no matter what those compositions and pieces were, now they got a proper form and shape on the self titled debut album from Luciferian Light Orchestra. Luciferian Light Orchestra' debut is even though being an elegant vintage sounding album still fresh, in a twisted way modern and offers many different elements which take the listener from one mood into another with such a lighty way. When you think that the music in here could became too complex, psychedelic or perverse, Luciferian Light Orchestra immediately kicks off with such a catchy structure that you'll be in an instant put again into the corridor of this musical occultistic, yet conceptual journey. Most of the things around Luciferian Light Orchestra are wrapped in a veil of mystery, so now, take off your dress and join Luciferian Light Orchestra in the sabbath!

A Forest Of Stars, a name, a trademark for uniqueness serves its fourth studio album and in a fantastic manner upgrades everything they've done so far. The band which always tries to create the atmosphere somehow similar to the first mechanical reproductions of music at the end of 19th century whilst incorporating the most expressive elements of progressive and avantgarde metal music with a base in black metal tradition. There's so much going on, so many tempo and mood changes are so fascinatingly put together and are forming one well structured complex masterwork. It's like a visionary madman on a rampage chanting about the twisted human nature backened by the talented group of musical inventors. The Englishmen did without doubt one hell of a job, maybe an album of the year, even if it's too early to talk about this, but I'm sure that it will be difficult to reach this kind of greatness. Beware The Sword You Cannot See maintains both, tradition and innovation, it's the most accessible, cohesive and at the same time most adventurous album done so far by A Forest Of Stars, yet without loosing its extreme blackish character. A stage play of devouring extremes and sinister drive welcomes you to take a sit in this theatre representing the decadent life. A ghostly freakshow for the obscure minded spectator to take part in.

The path into the secluded and deviant infernal underworld with modern world patients Sarcophagic is full of horror and unimaginable terror that slowly unveils the truth behind the questions about the hopes of better life. What is hidden is more terrifying than what the mind and dreams could ever foresee. Punishing industrial beats, agonizing shrieking tormented and electrified vocals, crushing guitar riffs and profound bass lines guides the listener through digitalized assault of sounds. Birth Of The Betrayer is a modern, well structured and decadent piece of sonic art, with a soundscape that has one foot in metal and the other one in industrial, it conjures a brutal, yet atmospheric catchy sonic madness. An album that must be a joy to every fan of industrial, to fans of extreme metal that are not afraid to explore beyond the borders, for each and every lover of aggressive electronic sounds, it's a classy shock therapy for all of you. Number 666 is burnt into it's hide, a hybrid beast, a modern era clairvoyant preacher of hopeless human existence.

Aeon Sable, a name that must already bring shivers to every and each soul fancying dark music out there. The band is one of the most productive and credible bands in the dark rock scene, but not only, with each new release, the German band expands the borders of the genre - let's say gothic rock, even though this is a bit unjust to say so for their musical creations. One year after the stunning "mini" album Aequinoctium Aeon Sable offers an ahead of time album named Visionaers. Aeon Sable become masters in creating vast atmospheric gothic rock soundscapes by making use of elements taken from post-rock and metal, even shoegaze, dark wave and cinematic music. Aeon Sable's fourth album reaches the heights that were set with previous albums, but it goes further. Thankfully also the production, final mix, mastering and artwork concept works in their favour. Visionaers is by all means an album showing now a completely consistent band that's expanding their own artistical limits and with that, maybe even unconsciously, writing the history of the genre, making it modern with an unpretentious approach. A must!

Welcome to the bewitching and magical pagan world of The Moon And The Nightspirit. The Hungarian duo consisting of singer/multiinstrumentalist Ágnes Tóth and lyricist/multiinstrumentalist Mihály Szabó, brought to life in 2003 is back with their fifth studio album named Holdrejtek. In truth there are not enough words in the vocabulary to express the magical entity of their music, but let me tell you that their enchanting and compulsive creations split between medieval, folk, world, pagan and celtic music are simply out of this world. Holdrejtek is absolutely their strongest and most compact release to date, it's thematically based and influenced, like each of their albums, by deep veneration for and love of nature, yet this time approached by much more philosophical and intellectual way and less romantical. Still this doesn't mean that it has lost any of its romantic charm, contrary. The Moon And The Nightspirit can captivate with an interesting sense to compose smooth, yet very rich, almost cinematic ambiances that can be compared in terms of effectiveness to those of Dead Can Dance, but the acts that are stylistically nearest are Norwegians Arcana or Austrians Die Verbannten Kinder Evas. Holdrejtek holds an ancient aura and engulfs its vibe from the ancient folklore and mysticism. It's essence is dark, yet pure, it's elegant and hypnotic in the most audacious way.

"So face the dark and I’ll teach you about fire in a blink of an eye" sang Deathstars in their famous song "Cyanide", which launched them to the stars in the melodic metal compartment. They enchanted our souls by their unique approach to music by delivering the aestheticism of ugliness and have probably become the fastest growing band after the release of their second album, Termination Bliss. And if female fronted bands exploit the good looks of their singers to amuse the male audience, Deathstars are a treat for us, ladies. Perfectly shaped Bernadotte is not only the modern Adonis in flesh, but his haunting and deep as the abyss vocals sound so seductive and eloquent, it is impossible to resist him. In any way. The Perfect Cult doesn’t bring anything new from the band's camp, as their distinctive sound is still based on the use of simplistic, but striking guitar riffs, mixed with quite a heavy use or keyboards. And of course, creating an atmosphere, no one else can: seductive, dark, striking and captivating. Time will tell whether the listeners will embrace the contrast between the first and the second half of the album or simply choose one half as a predominant and preferred. But this release definitely marks a new point in the evolution of Deathstars, as the band showed us they still got it and can still deliver an album, everyone will be talking about.

The monument of gothic rock named Whispers In The Shadow has been with us for 18 years until today and now the band, lead by charismatic frontman, occultist Ashley Dayour is at the end of the significant chapter. The cycle which deals with the four alchemic stages of the transformation, transformed into sounds and words, inspired by great occultists like Austin Osman Spare, Aleister Crowley and Kenneth Grant, yet by some authors like Philip K. Dick and H.P. Lovecraft is the reflection, not just a collection of albums with songs and lyrics, it is a journey, it's a path into chaos... it's the mystical circle that closes only when you devote your mind and soul into the abyss crafted by Whispers In The Shadow. Beyond The Cycles Of Time is a complex album in its core. The band strikes with some really astonishing groovers like is the captivating opener "Crossroads" and its ablazing metalic chorus, then you can't even take a breath and there's another hard kicking post-punk/goth rocking anthem "His Name Is Legion". If the name Whispers In The Shadow wasn't already the one of those that you think of immediately when asked about gothic music in general, then with this release it surely will become.

This truly legendary British band and one of the pioneers of electro punk or sometimes noted as the fathers of gothic dance music started writing new material in 2010, when original members Tony Mayo, Paul Davies, Mick Clark and Cliff Chapman came together again after almost 30 years and later were joined by Mark Irving and sexy muse Jet Noir and what has been started over 30 years ago finally returned in top condition and released what was needed, their debut album. Album named Beyond Planets is a collection of new and old songs of the band. Of course, the old ones were reworked and got a contemporary sound, but there's still the old good charm in them. There's no secret that I slightly prefer new songs over the old ones, like the opener "We Are", hypnotizing dark masterpiece "Alone" or cinematic, somehow diabolic "Glow" can be counted as pure jewels in the dark electronic music spectrum. Naked Lunch add smoothly a certain dose of humour and psychedelia in their music and are professionals in keeping their songs dynamic as hell, so there are no worries that the listener could become bored. Now the first step is behind them and I'm eagerly waiting what's there to follow.

USA based Night Sins are one of those bands whose sound is deeply rooted in the past, but is extremely well done and if this album would be released 20 or 30 years ago we will talk about it as a monumental release. Anyway, even now, those who like the things that are essential for the genre will go mad after this release. Their main fountain of influence must be mighty The Sisters Of Mercy, The Cult and early Clan Of Xymox, but you can't get past noticing a lot of elements that were used by German pioneers of the genre Love Like Blood on their first couple of albums and wave elements that have something in common with Born For Bliss. A little more than 25 minutes of music up here pushes the listener in a hallucinating dark abyss, full of memorable and shivering, yet very atmospheric sounds. So, if you can't bring anything fresh into the genre than do things like Nights Sins have done on interesting titled album To London Or The Lake.

Aeon Sable became an entity of genre expanding gothic rock with their three albums and one of the most consistent acts of dark music out there. Even though Aequinoctium brings just a little bit more than thirty minutes of music, its five songs hold such great vibrations and above average musical compositions that must move the soul of each lover of gloomy sounds.
Aequinoctium is in a way a bit softer, tender and even more emotional in comparison with Saturn Return, it's a work of art that builds on special ambiances. There is something for fans of classic gothsters like The Fields Of The Nephilim or The Sisters Of Mercy, there are elements of typical post rockers, there are shoegaze elements, there is a lot of uniqueness. Everything mesmerizes also with great production and beautiful dark artwork and very special package. Aequinoctium is a modern album, or if you prefer mini album, that is a shame if it will be missed in each fans of dark music collection.

German long running band End Of Green are back with their eighth album and like each one of their previous releases also this one brings some really mesmerizing moments and some compulsory fillers. This time there are a lot of dynamic tracks and smooth melodies, based on quite simple, but on the other hand very effective and heavy guitar riffing. Songs like strong, magnificent and dark goth/doom "Holidays In Hell" with probably the best vocal job the band ever did, then stunning and extremely catchy with great flowing refrain "Home On Fire", are two songs that must the best the band ever did. The Painstream is a good album that has its magnificient moments, it's gloomy, yet dynamic with a nice drive and well flowing songs that, I believe, will shine best when played live.

Seven long years have passed since Summoning's masterpiece Oath Bound and now the wait is over my dear Elves, Dwarves, Ents, Hobbits, Orcs, Men and all the rest of Middle-earth races. Silenius and Protector, the two responsible for the Summoning music are staying loyal to all those things that Summoning was and is about - their vision of a soundtrack for Middle-earth legends. Old Mornings Dawn is, believe me, one of the greatest sounding albums that deal with those matters and I can't be wrong with saying that Summoning have no competitors in this world. Summoning did an album that is an instant classic, it can offer an amazing experience, either you are listening to it in the solitude of your room, while playing one of the Elder Scrolls instalations, walking in the nature or driving the car through some mesmerizing scenery. If you've searched for a masterpiece within epic, atmospheric, and  black metal music then search no more, Summoning did it!

Band: Todtgelichter
Album title: Apnoe
Release date: 15 April 2013
Label: Code666 Records

Their past in black metal waters where the band made a huge impact with their first two studio albums, Was Bleibt... in 2005 and Schemen in 2007 is behind them now, completely. Todtgelichter have signalized that they are on a new musical path with Angst, but such a huge change really wasn't expected. Apnoe is an adventure. There is simply nothing to be criticized, yet everything remains in the eye of the beholder, still I'm sure that album like this that sets new limits in modern metal scene must be praised by all those who search for something innovative and yet done in a professional manner. "For a new beginning" sings Tobias and he's right. This is really a new beginning for the band and they've started it in a huge impressive manner.

Band: Totengeflüster
Album title: Vom Seelensterben
Release date: 1 February 2013
Label: Self/Released

This is high class, believe me. The band doesn't discover new limits and doesn't create anything new, they stick to the legacy of some old, lets say it "kvlt" Norwegian black metal, but adding the perfection of the most intricate, yet valuable atmospheric symphonic passages that Dimmu Borgir and some of their followers crafted in those twenty years. The range of sounds is very wide, but not at all teared up, each sound takes it part where it should, yet the music is not predictable as you might expect. So, all those true black metallers out there, if you haven't gave up to the word symphonic in front of your black metal, then Totengeflüster are the thing for you, but even if you have done that I strongly suggest you to give a chance to this release.

At Every Door, the third album from Finnish band Hanging Garden is a melancholic, turbulent and very picturesque sonic adventure, that could ease your pain while you're waiting for death. - See more at: http://terrarelicta.com/index.php/reviews/all-reviews/984-hanging-garden-at-every-door-cd-2012-review#sthash.4d8eB3fe.dpuf

Album of the month - December 2012

Band: Aeon Sable
Album title: Saturn Return
Release date: 12 December 2012 (digital), 22 February 2013 (vinyl)
Label: AF-music

I don't like to repeat myself, but I must say it again that this year was a fantastic year for gothic rock. Bands like Brotherhood, Whispers In The Shadow, Merciful Nuns, Red Sun Revival, Golden Apes and many others released beautiful albums, but for 'creme de la creme' we had to wait until the end of the year and Aeon Sable's sophomore album. Modern, with many influences from countless genres that dwell in atmospheric sounds, yet original and bravely modern. Seven, almost epic songs and one hidden track at the end will certainly take you on an outstanding journey into discovery of most subtle forms of dark sounds within rock music. With kind of inteligent mystical lyrics and concept, everything is settled to offer one kind of sonic adventure. One of the greatest releases of 2012.

Album of the month - October 2012

Band: Red Sun Revival
Album title: Running From The Dawn
Release date: 12 October 2012
Label: AF-music

This London based group has achived something that every devoted gothic rock fan wishes for, and they did it on their very first studio album. Beautiful and smooth, adventureous and warm, still cold in it's core. It's a lullaby for long silent nights that approach with the winter season. If there's a possibility to chose an album that I would like to be played on my funeral than Running From The Dawn is one of the candidates. I must mention also great production and marvelous mix that make this album, although it has pure 80's or 90's golden goth vibe, somehow modern.

Album of the month - August 2012

When the time comes for these masters of melancholic rock or metal sounds every fan of theirs is expecting a masterpiece and Katatonia don't disappoint, never. Since their album Discouraged Ones and even before on their more extreme albums Katatonia mastered their sound that comes in its most formidable form right here, right on this album. Katatonia remains one of a kind rock group, modern and at the same time classy. With each new album of theirs there comes a question: what more? Katatonia can do more, each time, the limits of creating wonders in rock or metal music are not reached yet and those Sweds are proving this. With each listen there is a lot to discover in its waste assortment of sounds and overall complexity. Dead End Kings is one hell of an album and it deserves the highest possible rating.

Brotherhood's debut is one of those albums that everyone, who likes to hear gothic rock sound from the glorious days taking it's modern form and being played in the top notch manner, should just grab it and add it in the memoirs of gothic sounds as something that will be on the playlist many times.

Album of the month - May 2017

Band: Sólstafir
Album title: Berdreyminn
Release date: 26 May 2017
Label: Season Of Mist

Sólstafir with their highly recognizable and unique sound are absolutely hard to categorize, many have tried and almost everybody comes up with a different description, but yet it's pretty sure that if Pink Floyd, Bjork or Sigur Rós would be making metal or hard rock music than something similar to this would come up. Berdreyminn is a masterpiece by all means, just like it was Ótta (2014) or Svartir Sandar (2011), there's not much to add. The band sticks to the approved formula, yet on every their album we can find kind of new levels of atmospheric soundscapes, masterfully inducted surprises, in a word a whole new world to discover which is still familiar to those who were listening to any of Sólstafir's albums before. Sólstafir offer some of the best elements taken from each of their previous albums, yet spicing it up with some new things, they simply pushed it on the next level. Sólstafir's Berdreyminn is eclectic by a conscious choice to make feelings audible and transform taste as well as texture to sound. Berdreyminn is an adventure, still pretty dark album and beside extravagant instrumentations, only intense feelings of longing, joy, pain, nostalgia and melancholy take over the senses here and leads the listener into uncharted territories.

Album of the month - March 2017

Band: Phallus Dei
Album title: Black Dawn
Release date: 17 March 2017
Label: Dark Vinyl Records

Black Dawn is the latest release from Phallus Dei; the veteran German industrial/darkwave project with an extensive discography who are currently celebrating their 25th anniversary since inception. Noted as "one of the most important industrial/darkwave projects of the 90s", they certainly do not fail to deliver with Black Dawn. The crashing of rough steel melds with the distorted drone sound adding tension to the overall scene as buildings begin to fracture and the primal chaos is unleashed as it has been so many times before. Crashing cymbals and electric squeaks carry the fleet onward, further into the darkness and the haze. The overall sound and use of texture is perfected throughout the album. The sound is thick, deep and satisfying and the texture is raw. Definitely a case of 'less is more' with this album where the minimum is maximum and major concern is focused on the minor details. There is also a great variety of styles and approaches utilised throughout the album which separates each track from the others without breaking character. The base structure of each track is simple and repetitive while somehow avoiding becoming monotonous. The music is walking a fine line, like a tightrope walker effortlessly crossing between two buildings without hesitation or reservation. There is also the added variety of some well placed saxophone instrumental sections that really lift the listener to unexpected levels of appreciation.

Album of the month - January 2017

Band: Au Champ Des Morts
Album title: Dans La Joie
Release date: 27 January 2017
Label: Debemur Morti Productions

Au Champ Des Morts surprises a lot, their music is in no way just another typical post-black metal thing, there are many elements hidden and nicely blended inside their compositions. Just to see which bands are cited as their main influences tells a lot, Bathory, The Sisters Of Mercy, And Also The Trees, Celtic Frost, Alcest, The Devil's Blood, pretty varied list of artists... This album is a healing journey for darkened souls who want to explore the beauty of darkness. Dans La Joie is one of the best albums from this specific sector lately, it grabs your soul, heart and mind in an instant and enchains you with its multilayered yet aggressive and powerful sound so much that is impossible to remain cold blooded. The band makes such a varied sound, when going in full blast it's mostly comprised of shimmering effects-laden yet very intense tremolo picked guitars, melodic riffs, dense and thunderous, very technical drumming, blasting bass lines, rich gloomy ambiental synths and agonizing obsessed with the devil shrieks by Stefan. Dans La Joie has it all, it's dark, deeply personal but very vital record, is an interweaving of many dualities like transience and temporality, aggression and emotion, aging and aesthetics, depression and delirium, dreams and dust, well forged in analog sound and integrity and backed up by solid musical foundations.

Album of the month - November 2016

Band: Trees Of Eternity
Album title: Hour Of The Nightingale
Release date: 11 November 2016
Label: Svart Records

Hour Of The Nightingale is one of the most emotional albums you might have heard recently, it's a sound of a wounded siren from the spirit world, a message to the ones who were left behind, it's a personal drama, full of pain and beyond fight for subsistence, an intimate deposition of otherworldly sensations that will forever remain in our hearts. Even if the music is basically kind of a down tempo atmospheric doom/gothic metal, it embraces with such a perceivable feeling of warmth and kind of a seductive haunting dark power beyond anything that can be easily grasped. Trees Of Eternity walks throughout the thin line between monotony and dense soul shivering atmosphere which often so nicely builds up. The songs on Hour Of The Nightingale need time to penetrate your soul, your mind and heart must be opened up to absorb all of the emotion this album brings. Hour Of The Nightingale is a sweeping testimony how the darkness, all the sadness and all of the beauty the one can endure is transformed into music. It's an intimate sonic journey that needs your devotion, a sombre and yet sweet lullaby for those who can bear the heaviness of the most intricate inner thoughts. It's a testimony of ubiquitous presence of constant loss and oddly enough yet there are rays of the brightest of light that this album holds within its songs and lyrics.

Album of the month - September 2016

Band: Various Artists
Album title: Nyarlathotep: A Cryo Chamber Collaboration
Release date: 27 September 2016
Label: Cryo Chamber

Cryo Chamber has released a giant with this one. On Nyarlathotep, Cryo Chamber releases a more ambitious addition to their Lovecraftian Mythos series. Nyarlathotep takes into account everything Cryo Chamber learned on the previous two outings. Yet, it pushes the limits even further. Nyarlathotep consists of 26 artists. Cryo Chamber artists, as well as a handful of artists from outside the label bring forth a whole new tale. The use of field recordings on this album seems to reach magnificent heights. The use of so many different instruments within the album adds yet another layer of Earthly realism to the mix. Often these instruments take on a Near Eastern quality, usually of the Egyptian variety. This gives us a sense of location as well as a mental image of Nyarlathotep dressed in the garb of a great ancient pharaoh. From concept, to studio integration, to technique, to mastering, and everything in between, Nyarlathotep hits the intended mark. With each of these Lovecraftian Mythos collaborations, somehow these artists seem to keep topping themselves. Nyarlathotep is one more step up the ladder, one more masterpiece from a label that keeps pushing the boundaries, without alienating the origins of the genre. Nyarlathotep is an absolute must have album for any dark ambient fan. Over the three hours of music, there is never a dull moment, everything is orchestrated to perfection.

Album of the month - July 2016

Band: Heavenwood
Album title: The Tarot Of The Bohemians – Part 1
Release date: 22 July 2016
Label: Massacre Records

Dense instrumentations intertwined with many layers of huge orchestrations and varied vocals. The sound is very rich, it's difficult to talk about gothic metal here as Heavenwood brings forward many extreme elements, sometimes on the very edge of black metal and melodeath, but also doom, symphonic, progressive and above all dark, while keeping it very melodic and highly atmospheric throughout the whole playing time which clocks in almost 70 minutes. Quite an impressive conscription of musicians participated in the creation of this extremely evocative and strong album. There are many progressive parts inside those compositions, as well the listener will find typical dark/goth rock elements, especially in the groover "The Lovers". The galloping "The Chariot" is as well an example of one hell of a lush dark extreme metal in its best form. How amazing is the synth work with all those broad symphonic orchestrations can be best heard in the epic "Frithiof's Saga". The Tarot Of The Bohemians – Part 1 is very dramatic, an adventurous one, there are so many mood changes, pace variations, from fast speeding to mournful doom one. The sound is often rich and highly atmospheric, and above all also very original what is rare this days. The Tarot Of The Bohemians – Part 1 shines as well because of great production which adds a lot of depth and aggression.

Album of the month - May 2016

Band: Wormfood
Album title: L'Envers
Release date: 20th May 2016
Label: Apathia Records

Five years after their rather overlooked album Posthume and right in time for their 15th anniversary the French ensemble Wormfood returns with their fifth album entitled L’Envers. L'Envers is more than anything kind of a perverse and obscure horror stage play transformed into sound. The whole decadent and quite cinematic ambiance of this album does suck you in and even if you are like me that doesn't know a word of French language, believe me that you won't be dissapointed, it adds a mysterious feeling and there's nothing more appropriate than this to create this kind of unique dramatic gloominess. The sound is very rich, it has kind of a bewithching depth, guitars are rather backened but riffs are dense, while the bass guitar and drums play a strong part. The keys are just great and so the gothy atmosphere is really impressive and it adds more than just another dimension. There are many captivating catchy hooks and melodies on this album, but it's because of a rather avantgardish compositional structure of the songs that it doesn't really flourish out, it keeps everything a bit psychedelic and the listener is left in a kind of a suspension almost until the very end when the band offers such a captivating refrain in the "Poisonne". L'Envers is an album not to be missed out, there's so much going on in those soundscapes, it offers an amazing emotive darkened sonic journey that will open up an imaginary world of the perverse and the most remote Parisian theatre.

Album of the month - March 2016

Band: Aeon Sable
Album title: Hypaerion
Release date: 11 March 2016
Label: Solar Lodge

After four creations packed in black, the German most transcendental and genre bending dark rock masters Aeon Sable decided to make white as the new black! Hypaerion is a dark sonic adventure consisting of seven divergent tracks and like on all of their albums so far there's also a hidden track. Nino has polished up perfectly his deep, gently thick velvet voice into something that is a pure joy listening to, not only his singing tone is warm, it's emotional, gentle and tender, but on several occasions also harsh and so violent that many metal singers would be proud of it. Din-Tah is a guitar master when it comes to soothing guitar riffs, there's nothing to add, and while the main guitar lines might sound simple, there's not to be found any kind of technical guitar exaggeration, except for some magical leads, instead everything is well compressed, smooth, it seems so simple, but on the other hand also vibrant and lucid. Aeon Sable once again only testify what we lovers of dark music already knew, that they are maybe the most creative and credible force of the genre out there. They are bringers of a new era, this isn't anymore the third wave of gothic rock, this is something completely new, this is Hypaerion, this is Aeon Sable.

Album of the month - January 2016

Band: The Human Voice
Album title: Silent Heart
Release date: 21 January 2016
Label: Cyclic Law

Silent Heart is a deep and moving experience from beginning to end. Never becoming overwhelming yet always holding onto the listener emotionally, it dives deep into our psyches and tears at what makes us human, what makes us feel. Silent Heart was years in the making and Harleif Langas proves yet again that the best things take time and patience to create. Silent Heart is arguably one of Langas' best albums to date, and probably the most emotionally gripping of all. While Northaunt often gives one the feeling of being in the midst of a dark and desolate landscape, The Human Voice manages to manipulate the mind itself, pulling us through deeply melancholic and personal passages, reflecting the dark waters of a tortured soul. Silent Heart is highly recommended to any fan of the more subdued and personal side of dark ambient. However, if that kind of thing doesn't usually tickle your fancy, you may find that this album is the exception. Silent Heart is truly a masterwork by Langas and yet another testament to why he is one of the most celebrated and essential names in the dark ambient genre. The ability to bring forth deep emotions in the listener is a testament to the meticulous preparation and highest standards held by Harleif Langas.

In its essence Hearts Of Black Science are nothing but an atmospheric-electronic-pop act, but with additions of elements from post-rock, gothic, dream-pop, indie-pop, industrial, shoegaze and yet much more, the sound becomes a fantastic captivating journey into dreamlands. The sound is all the way so very addictive and there are even moments when you won't know if you should just close your eyes and be taken away by the music or you should move your feet and tearfully dance until it hurts. Reverberate bass lines, strong impactful beats, cosmic samples, rigorous gloomy keys, melancholic melodies, smooth guitars, irresistible loops, so very emotional, yet versatile vocals all over, with many breathtaking male/female duets and backing ethereal female voices, dramatic background speeches, are all reasons that this is one of those albums that gets easily under your skin, even if you're not really a fan of this musical genre. Hearts Of Black Science made a little treasure that just waits to be discovered. It's one of those albums that has that rare power to captivate in an instant and this initial enthusiasm doesn't fade after countless spins.

Amorphis are struggling real hard to survive on the market by trying to compose interesting and not repetitive albums, sometimes more, other times less successful, and Under The Red Cloud belongs into the category where the Finns did it with greatness. The new studio effort from the band brings us ten tracks, where we can find all of the most important elements that characterized Amorphis's music; there are tons of catchy melodic riffs, melancholic passages, folk insertions, aggressive and brutal parts, perfect guitar leads, progressive elements and yet much more. The sound is dense, in a way similar to the one on the previous album, but there's to be found kind of a dynamics that we were used to hear on their legendary album Elegy from 1996, and still there's that catchy melodic factor that was perfectly used before on almost each of their albums, but perfected for example on Skyforger (2009). Amorphis on their new album sound modern, adventurous, but still very much conscious of their legacy. Under The Red Cloud, instead of some parts that sound like fillers, is maybe the best album this band did in the last ten years. It has it all we should expect from the band of a such caliber, they sound more devoted into what they are doing than ever and the result is highly captivating, melodic, dense, versatile and surprisingly dark sound.

The notorious British band is back with their highly anticipated 11th studio album! Cradle Of Filth are without doubt one of those most talked about outfits, one of those bands that divided the extreme metal scene into those who love and hate the name just by seeing the logo or hear the name. Cradle Of Filth promised to go back to their roots with this new opus and they were not kidding, ok, not entirely, but that scarry gothy feeling throughout the songs is back again. In a way that's the crucial point in Hammer Of The Witches which still mantains the technical factor heard on the previous album, The Manticore & Other Horrors, on a high level, but like it or not the song structures are much more flowing and ambiance is gloomier than on a couple of previous albums. Cradle Of Filth's 11th studio album is without doubt a strong player in their large discography, it unites the elements from bands past without losing the modern approach utilized on a couple of previous albums. Hammer Of The Witches is maybe the best Cradle Of Filth's album since Cruelty And The Beast, it's both a strident reaffirmation of this band's eternal class and a reinvigorated statement of intent from a revitalised metallic force at the peak of their collective powers. The hammer is coming down, hard, and revenge will be sweet indeed.

End Of All Existence is an audio visual work of art, an imaginary apocalypse movie transformed into sound by two of the most important goth rock artists, Artaud Seth (Garden Of Delight, Merciful Nuns, Lutherion) and Ashley Dayour (Whispers In The Shadow, The Devil & The Universe, Coma Divine,...). Musically End Of All Existence is one of the darkest albums ever released, it's in no way a gothic rock album like somebody could imagine because of both names behind it, neither is some kind of occult dark ambient, "xy" wave album or anything like that, even if the elements of all those genres are all hidden there, but there's much more, it's hardly compared to anything you've heard before. Artaud Seth and Ashley Dayour gave us an audio masterpiece that is an instant cult. It opens up a fiction world full of questions about humankind's fate, its role in the universe and in some kind of a paranoid way delivers the ultimate truth. End Of All Existence is one hell of a complex album, it's still a rock album in its essence but it shouldn't be approached in a traditional way. The two artists know how to take the listener on a journey full of marvelous discoveries that will slowly, step by step, unveil before each one who'll dare to step into the maelstrom of End Of All Existence. Near Earth Orbit made music that could be described as apocalyptic atmospheric doom goth wave transmission and even this classification can be a totally wrong one.

Exactly twenty years after their first full length release, Wolfheart, the Portuguese quintet is back in black and believe it or not, they are on their prime. Establishing their recognizable sound throughout their admired and rich repertoire, their latest album, Extinct, is everything anyone who at least fancies Moonspell a bit would want and wish, as it not only portrays their immense talent and skilful musicianship, but also depicts just how much they have grown and learnt throughout the years. So what you are in for is an incredibly transcendental and remarkable path towards the end, that won't make you fear for life, but you'll want to drive faster and further into the promised extinction as you go along. There is absolutely no doubt Moonspell gave it all they have on Extinct. Imagine taking all the best features of Moonspell's discography and integrate them in the most eloquent sounding melodies: that is what they are offering us. Moonspell are still – after 26 years of their being – full of fresh ideas, bold enough to explore different aspects of their sound, sliding through colourless soundscapes, moving further and most of all – with such immense knowledge possessing absolute control of what they are doing. Extinct may revolve around dying and extinction, but Moonspell have never been as alive as they are.

Antichrist superstar is no more. This is the era of the pale emperor. Marilyn Manson has slowly been stripping down the dense, industrial effects of his music through the 2010's and The Pale Emperor is as bare naked as it gets. He grew older, he matured and more than his art the media and the public seemed to be interested in his personal live and enjoy every single gossip of his failed marriage. The Pale Emperor is undoubtedly Marilyn Manson's best work since 2000's Holy Wood (In The Shadow Of The Valley Of Death), without a shadow (which may or may not be the one of the valley of death) of doubt. Touching the themes of mortality, violence, religion, war and of course, inner struggles. If Manson may have lost his focus in the past few years, he is clearly on the right track again. With this release he has stripped himself to the bone and exposed his most inner shadows in the limelight as never before. Even though this album is a twist from his trademark sound, it delivers massive sharpness, in-your-face attitude and fearless edge; everything we love and fear when it comes to Marilyn Manson.

The Birthday Massacre in their 15 year lasting existence – managed to create a name for themselves with their own sound, combining vintage synthpop smashing flamboyant sound with raw alternative rock and smooth gothic rock insertions. Superstition, the latest effort of the sextet, is visually again covered in the band's signature purple colours and just by that you can already feel you'll again encounter a world where you can either walk through the bubbly joyful pink lands or on the other hand take a trip into the cold and introspective world of blue. Years of musicianship indeed do show when it comes to The Birthday Massacre, as this album is undoubtedly their absolutely best. They have proven they know just how to shift through various musical styles that influence their sound and put each and every one of those in faultless equilibrium. More than noteworthy release that can be proud to present itself with its shining diversity, uncompromising coherence, larger-than-life melodies and obsolete tranquility all in one. However, do not take this album too easily nor for granted; take your time, make it worth your while.

The clock stroke Mitternacht (English: midnight) and the queen of sorrow, enigmatic and spiritual visible ghost Anna-Varney Cantodea and her shadows woke up from eternal sleep and presented the 12th full length studio release by the always mournful Sopor Aeternus & The Enseble Of Shadows. There seems to be three aspects of endless sorrow on Mitternacht; one stripped of everything and just existing per sé, one slowly slipping into a world of deeply disturbing derangement and one, drawing a feeling you've reached a point when you are hurting so much, you can't even feel it; you can't shed a tear or say a word. You simply give into your pain, accept your surroundings and it brings you some inner peace and even a glimpse of joy. Anna-Varney's vocals are – as usual-  a big and important part of the overall ambiance, because her signature, dramatic, expressing style of singing is so unique and such a great part of Sopor's music. The symbiosis between delivered melodies and her darkish, twisted, sometimes wicked and at other occasions playful vocal work is impeccable and blends together in a perfect equilibrium. Its sundscapes portray the non compos mentis cycle of grief, pain and death, which travels slowly and anxiously into light, hope and life. It will open your old wounds and they will bleed again; it will awake your deepest fears and bring to surface your most painful memories, twisting the knife deeper into your bleeding heart and slowly dying soul.

Twelve years have passed since Empyrium released their last studio album! Can you believe that? Now it's 2014 and yes, Schwadorf and Helm who have undergone both, an artistic and personal growth, are back victorius, with a masterpice, an album par-excellence. The Turn Of The Tides is a collection of songs where natural ambiances and most deep feelings are set to music. This is an emotional journey where the only limit is time. It's caressing, but at the same time it shows the other, unknown, merciless side of existence. It's difficult to give a rightly explanation of the sounds on this album, because I believe that everyone who'll listen to this album will be overwhelmed by different emotions. The Turn Of The Tides with its seven chapters is an intimate album that speaks to yourself with its immense expressionistic power and abstraction, addressing to the cycles within nature, tides of the sea, the change of seasons, circulation of water and human life, thus insinuates how everything rediscovers itself in everything. Like forever trapped in a cycle of forever returning things, The Turn Of The Tides is a private matter of each listener, is a meditative journey, it's a subtle rediscovery of the eternal cosmic cycles inside every human, nature and above all that. There's no pain without beauty at all.

Melting Sun is one of those albums that speaks to the devoted listener only and his will to be just a bit escapistic. Almost each one of six album parts has a very special feeling where Lantlôs build on the atmosphere, but in an interesting way just before reaching the ultimate peak they melt it down. Not in a bad way, contrary, somehow there's an inner play with emotions. While being partialy soft and smooth, it is in its core very heavy and turbulent. Mostly slow to mid tempo paced song structures can be described as something between post metal and dream rock, yes you'll also notice some shoegaze moments, sludge elements and a trifle with ambient, but this is Lantlôs and all those who knew this band from before already know that they can expect something unique, something almost psychedelic. It's a perfect, honest and enthralling soundtrack for the summer days to come. Melting Sun is after all a bright album, yet in a specific way can bring some melancholy on the surface. Even though the scene is deluged with many bands and projects trying to create something similar in atmosphere, not many succeed in this like Lantlôs. Melting Sun is not for everybody, you must have kind of adventurous musical taste, you must like to be taken away by music,...

Ever since Nigredo’s final lasting breath perfumed with dissonance the air during 2004, a beast had been crafting its legacy within the very entity of Diary Of Dreams. Slowly, but steadily, it was taking shape so as to appear in the 11th hour of the band, Elegies In Darkness, their 11th full-length to date. Elegies In Darkness inhales the thick air from the scorned mouth and exhales the multifaceted grandeur of internal affairs straight from the eyes with the bleakest of colors; one stare at the cover artwork will convince you.Elegies in Darkness is one of those albums that won’t rely upon hit-songs and highlights, after all it doesn’t stand in the light. It’s a soulful testimony and should be cherished as such through its whole duration in order to treasure everything it stands for. If you thought it would be that easy surviving inside the vast ocean of emotions you should know that Diary Of Dreams can play tricks on your mind anytime and they achieve it once again with the heart-rending "A Day In December" and "Die Glassen Der Stadt" among other songs and passages that cut your breath like a knife in the wind. Dreams have been etched in the diary, another chapter is fulfilled.

Aenaon’s Extance is avant-garde at its finest. Their unique fusion of black metal with classical jazz and bluesy touch is simply remarkable. Inside this genre, that allows so much, but needs precision and focus, Extance is everything you could wish for. The almost 13 minutes in length, "Palindrome" is an example of progressive extreme metal at its top. Creating such vivid images of derangement, it reminds a bit of Vulture Industries and their approach to avant-garde. With the addition of jazz elements, blues guitar melodies, a piano or keyboard tune now and then and the combination between harsh and clean vocals, one could not wish for a better balance between all these elements. It tells a story, it takes a listener on an odyssey through undiscovered and dark emotions and moments of insanity. Aenaon’s debut Cendres Et Sag, is probably bursting with pride, for having such a strong, melodic and spectacular successor. Pushing the sound to its limits and veiling black metal in such highly enjoyable classic colours is more than worth checking out.

Such an oustanding mix of power, anger, passion, emotion and atmosphere like this album holds wasn't heard for a long time. The Asgarda is a journey that not only bewitches with its amazing music but also with a message that it holds. Not to mention one of the most captivating and powerful female vocal performances that I've had the opportunity to listen lately. Like if Sex Pistols or Dead Kennedys had a bastard child with The Sisters Of Mercy and this child was raised by Faith And The Muse and Paradise Lost. Guitar riffs are mostly made of typical gothic rock and metal elements, then there are amazing synths that make a great atmosphere and I can't forget about the mesmerizing piano touches and other sounds that make on this record such an unbelievable wall of sound, mostly because of impeccable production. This is without doubt one of the albums that will compete for album of the year!

The musical output of The Devil & The Universe is mostly based on instrumental soundscapes, still there are occasional spoken words, like female speech saying: "Flesh is a trap and Magick sets us free", in rather upbeat, almost danceable opener, yet scary "NOD", or in dark industrial/new wave track "The Pilgrims Regress", and so on... The Devil & The Universe is not only based on music, but as well on magick, certain imagery, meditation,... it's an diabolical meditative journey that could appeal to your darkest desires that art as it's music can produce. The music done by The Devil & The Universe is not that simple to be labeled, certainly it has a lot to do with dark ambient, but at the same time time you can find varius elements from industrial music, 80s horror soundtracks, sometimes minimal wave, oriental sounds, 70s ambient/new age stuff... I believe that there was no coincidence that it was released on autumnal equinox day, there is black magic, it's a work of a occult powers that serve to someones mind and why not give your spirit a walk into this eerie world of The Devil & The Universe.

Brazilian duo Thy Light brought us one of the biggest surprises this year so far and what's even more surprising they did it with their debut album. Melancholic piano passages, breathtaking orchestrations, gloomy ambiances, acoustic guitars, mind breaking vocals and hellish shrieks, always converging in a well controled melodic black metal devastation, where great guitar leads and dark atmospheres created by amazing use of keyboards and soaring, yet somehow peaceful acoustic guitar lines, makes this release one really enjoyable listen if you are willing to be taken away by "exquisite" depressive momentum. While some devoted black metallers could find this release too much keyboard oriented, I must say that Thy Light found the right balance between those and harsher metal lines, so it could appeal to larger segment of "suiciders".  Yes, this is an album to be consumed over and over again. Beautiful suicidal musical art!

Enshine did a mind provoking album that builds on the atmosphere and ambiance, it's a journey that can easily let you go with its flow and I'm more than sure that all those who know how difficult is to reach the right atmosphere that can overtake the listener will more than appreciate Enshine's effort. The sound of Enshine actually comprises of Slumber's heaviness and Atoma's atmosphere, but still this music has much more in it, everything is brought on a higher level. There's no doubt that the album will appeal mostly to lovers of melodic doom metal, but I can easily recommend it to each one who wants to be taken away with the majesty of those sonic waves. I only hope that Origin will find sooner or later its successor and Enshine will not be just another "one-album" project. More than recommended!

Band: New Keepers Of The Water Towers
Album title: Cosmic Child
Release date: 11 March 2013
Label: Listenable Records

New Keepers Of The Water Towers main inspiration must be hard rock and psychedelic sounds done in the early 70's, of course Black Sabbath come in mind, but imagine now that Roger Waters and David Gilmour joins them on some rehearsals and even Steve Harris and Dave Murray want to take their part here. Do you get a picture? The band is making a very nice experiment here, combining the best elements from early era of above mentioned artists, but still adding their own note. Believe me that they've found a right formula for doing that and made an extremely captivating sonic experience. Even in songs that exceed ten minutes in lenght the band can keep the listener focused. Great musical talent which shines on this release make this album one of the highlights of the first quarter of 2013.

Band: Hanging Garden
Album title: At Every Door
Release date: 21 January 2013
Label: Lifeforce Records

At Every Door, the third album from Finnish band Hanging Garden is a melancholic, turbulent and very picturesque sonic adventure, that could ease your pain while you're waiting for death. Each song can make a special moment, of course heard in the right mood, it can take you into the most subtle and painful emotional state ever witnessed. As the album starts with "Ten Thousand Cranes" the band shows immediately an outstanding power, cold atmosphere that just draws you into this obscure abyss of At Every Door. At Every Door is one of those records that needs a devoted listener, otherwise it won't make such an impact on you as it should, it's not your everyday listen, but I'm sure this album will find the audience which will appreciate the work like this that doesn't follow any trends, although it has still that special Nordic coldness and flavour.

Album of the month - November 2012

Band: Saturnus
Album title: Saturn In Ascension
Release date: 30 November 2012
Label: Cyclone Empire

More than six years after one of the best doom metal releases ever recorded (Veronika Decides To Die) Danish Saturnus are back. The marvelous sense for crafting melancholic melodies, slow paced and strong rhytms, marvelous atmospheres, impressive songwriting and distinctive deep guttural main vocals are the elements that make a formula. Saturnus offers a journey into most subtle dimensions of depressive mind, but yet with kind of hope that is reached on some levels with some extraordinary guitar leads, just listen to the guitar solo in "Wind Torn" or "Mourning Sun". Saturn In Ascension is well balanced even from productional side which was done by legendary Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian,...), yet it adds a right dose of heaviness into the sound. Saturn In Ascension is a must and one of the albums that will run for a title album of the year.

Band: Lacrimosa
Album title: Revolution
Release date: 7 September 2012
Label: Hall Of Sermon

Institution like Lacrimosa needs no introduction. They've already achived the top status in fields of gothic music and pushed the barriers of the genre into dimensions that only few bands could have achived. Solemn orchestrations, piano touches, driving bass and rock elements blend so very well together with great vocal performance in this atmospheric rock opera that is really a joy listening to it. Revolution is another great musical jurney under trademark Wolf/Nurmi. There are some flaws, but as an entirety I must say that I'm impressed with it.

Album of the month - July 2012

Band: Sun Devoured Earth
Album title: Sounds Of Desolation
Release date: 4 July 2012
Label: Self-Released

If you are not familiar with this Latvian one man band and you like melancholic atmospheric music then you are missing a lot. Sun Devoured Earth offers one of the most intriguing examples of how to make melancholic music that touches your soul and helps you explore dark hidden corners of your own existence. In it's basis this is a rock album, because it's based on the rhytmic sections, guitar melodies, drumbeats that could be classified as one, but it's calm, gentle, almost romantic and captivating. The palete of sounds that are put so well together make this release one of the best from this band till now and one of the most intriguing in the, let's say, post-rock, ambient, gothic, shoegaze,... fields lately.

Album of the month - May 2012

Band: The Cult
Album title: Choice Of Weapon
Release date: 22 May 2012
Label: Cooking Vinyl Records

From the opener "Honey From A Knife" on we are aware that this is not an ordinary album, but a huge maelstrom of ten turbulent rock songs. Memorable album absolutely. The Cult are in a formidable form and they gave us one of the best rock albums so far this year. Although that they are sticking to the approved formula, they still offer modern sound with it's rather gloomy mystical veil which has decorated and given depth to all of their albums so far. Production was done by well known Bob Rock and it's perfect from all aspects.
