UK‑based synth‑pop/dark electro act 404 Error return with their sophomore full‑length, Genre Reveal Party — a record that marks a notable evolution for the Northern England project led by the semi‑anonymous artist 36663. While their debut Scene Killers, released in June 2024, earned praise for its tongue‑in‑cheek tribute to goth culture and its infectious synth‑pop hooks, the new album steps into more mature, sharply crafted territory.
To accompany the release, 404 Error has unveiled a video for the track "Vanity Booking". The song tackles a growing issue within the live music scene: bands and promoters booking oversized venues despite knowing the turnout won’t match the capacity. As 36663 explains, "I keep seeing bands and fans putting up photos and videos in empty venues and it's worrying. All gigs are a risk, but in some cases, there are bands and promoters who KNOW the band cannot fill the venue, and in a time when everyone is hurting, it does not help struggling venues. And sure, the idea of booking an Academy room is nice, but what's the point in doing a 500‑cap venue to 30 people!"
While Scene Killers leaned heavily into satire, Genre Reveal Party widens its thematic lens. "There were only so many jokes you can make on one album about the same thing, so we had to go wider," says 36663. The result is a blend of playful jabs — such as "What We Do In The Toilets", inspired by the characters one encounters in goth‑club restrooms — alongside more serious reflections on uncomfortable realities: predatory photographers, empty‑room performances, and the pressures facing underground artists.
With Genre Reveal Party 404 Error sharpen their sound and deepen their commentary, delivering an album that balances humour with hard truths — all wrapped in their signature dark electro pulse. Link
