PaPerCuts - Disbelief [Maxi Single] (2012) - Review

Band: PaPerCuts
Album title: Disbelief [Maxi Single]
Release date: 25 September 2012
Label: AF-music

Tracklisting:
01. Disbelief
02. In Love With... Life
03. Manic (Remix)

German duo PaPerCuts returns with its third studio release. After two EP's from 2009 now they put out this single which contains two new songs and one remixed track from their Soulsick EP. The things haven't changed that much on the musical side, of course, there is slight improvement from previous releases regarding the sole compositions and especially production. If you are not familiar with this band than the simpliest way to describe their music is to say that they are kind of mixture between Nine Inch Nails, Lacuna Coil, Marilyn Manson, Siouxie And The Banshees, plus some harsh metal, classic goth rock with a hint of post-punk and there you probaly go. PaPerCuts mix some massive metalic guitar riffs, with gentle, kind of psychedelic female vocals, everything played and wrapped in dark goth atmosphere.

So far so good, but there's a hitch. Although this combination looks pretty interesting, the final product is not that exciting. Somehow vocals are not going that well together with musical basis. I' m not saying that PaleViolettEve has a bad voice, contrary. I'm even not saying that instrumental side isn't good. I just think that vocals should be more deep, expressive and powerfull for this kind of instrumental basis. I enjoyed PaPerCuts slower and calm balladic songs on previous releases that are absent here, I also miss some piano touches and orchestrations here and there. Of course, this is only a 'single'  with two new songs and for final impression we must wait for whole album which is announced to be released later this year. "Disbelief" could be a good track, guitar sound and classy metal riffs are great, there is even a slight progressive note in it, but the overall result somehow lacks in dynamics and before mentioned mismatch between instrumental side and vocals make this one a bit shallow. Kind of dark industrial note of "In Love With... Life" works fine in combination with Nihils powerful guitar riffing and touch of psychedelic vibe. Vocal lines, rather hypnotic, seem to be misplaced here, maybe another lyrical conception could save the whole thing. PaPerCuts simply didn't get the right flow in those two songs. This release is saved with an amazing remix of a song "Manic", which is much better than original one. Massive and slow drive, industrial beats and Nine Inch Nails kind of vibe works well and vocals are appropriate here. Thanks to a good production the whole thing comes out a bit better than could be in opposite way.

Disbelief is not that bad record, the only problem is that some things don't match as they could. I hope that their full lenght will contain better composed tunes without loosing that heaviness that make PaPerCuts somehow special in gothic rock/metal scene. If you like to hear some nice and heavy guitar riffing than check this one out on bands Bandcamp page.
