Belarusian post‑black metal visionaries Dymna Lotva have released their striking and deeply symbolic new music video, “Return My Coffin Home”, a work that cuts straight to the heart of exile, loss, and the longing for a final return to one’s homeland. The track also features a moving guest performance by Ukrainian musician Ingvarr of Schreigarm, whose presence adds further emotional weight to the song’s cross‑cultural resonance.
Speaking about the concept, vocalist Nokt offers a stark and personal reflection: “Many of our friends — and we ourselves — may die in exile, in captivity, or at war, but all of us want our bodies to be buried in our homeland. If we cannot return alive, we still hope to return in death.”
The song’s lyrics intertwine Belarusian and Ukrainian language, symbolising shared grief and shared hope. Ingvarr’s contribution, Nokt explains, was essential: "He brought his language, his voice, and his heart into this piece.”
At the centre of the composition lies an authentic Belarusian protective incantation, recited in full. Traditionally spoken to safeguard travellers and ensure their safe return, it becomes a poignant question within the song: will it work for us? The verses also draw from several traditional protective travel spells, woven together into a unified text.
“Return My Coffin Home” further incorporates lines from the old Ukrainian folk song “Plyve kacha po Tysyni” (“A Duckling Swims in the Tisza”), widely recognised in the 21st century as a requiem for fallen Ukrainian heroes. The track also features sopilka and ocarina crafted by master instrument makers from Lviv — a heartfelt tribute to Ukraine, which the band openly declares their love and support for:
“We love Ukraine with all our hearts. We wish our friends victory. Slava Ukraini!”
The new single arrives ahead of Vyraj, Dymna Lotva’s fourth full‑length album, scheduled for release on 7 August via Prophecy Productions. With this record, the Belarusian dissidents take a decisive leap in their artistic evolution, proving once again that they are far more than a “one‑trick pony” — instead, a fiercely original force within the post‑black metal landscape.
The dramatic video for “Return My Coffin Home”, directed by Ryncuk Vystarobski, can be watched below. And if you missed it, the previously released single “The Boat Of Despair”, featuring a remarkable guest appearance by Aaron Stainthorpe (High Parasite, ex‑My Dying Bride), is still available HERE.
