The French–Spanish–Swiss post‑punk band Raskolnikov have released a new single, "I Vow to Thee My Fury", heralding their forthcoming fifth album.
The new track is a logical follow‑up to the two albums Gorgon'Zola and Stockholm, both released in 2025. Recording took place in early 2026 in Annemasse (Haute‑Savoie, France). Music by Raskolnikov; lyrics by Mathieu Pawełski‑Szpiechowycz.
Formed in Geneva in 2015, Raskolnikov draw on the various "wave", post‑punk and shoegaze movements of the 70s, 80s and 90s. Their music is as melancholic as it is hypnotic and energetic, with existentialist lyrics. It blends the dark, drifting world of coldwave with the rebellious energy of post‑punk and the melodic density of shoegaze. A penetrating voice carries the songs, posing open‑ended, first‑person questions about destruction, anger, obsession, oblivion, regression, fear, failure, pain, regret, downfall and loss of self — yet not without glimmers of hope.
This polyphony of unordered consciousness, leading to a division of the self, echoes the band's name, which refers back to Rodion Raskolnikov, the protagonist of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's social‑psychological‑philosophical novel Crime and Punishment (Russian: Prestuplenie i nakazanie, 1866). The Russian word raskol means "schism": a break with the conventions of the musical genres the band draws upon, as well as with the nominative notions of individual and collective being, reason and madness, and society‑imposed isolation.
