Australian one-man project Dirt Hand released a brand new single and video "Thorn". The single is taken from the upcoming album entitled Thorn Variations, which will be out on 1st March. Dirt Hand is a mix of traditional balladry and art-wank process experimentation. This solo project by Arun Roberts makes conceptual and process-based records that mostly end up sounding like alt-rock infused with neo-folk.
Arun produced a series of polyrhythmic canons built out of a single hand clap pattern. These variations became the building blocks for the entire project. For this recording Arun wanted to capture the players as they were still figuring out their parts, in a kind of magic garden of spontaneous adventure, so he deliberately told them nothing about the recording session.
Dirt Hand strives to carry these ideas into their live show as well. Arun picks the band for each show from an open roster of highly skilled and highly intuitive players and lets them run free. Song structure and concept are strictly preserved while the actual notes played are left entirely up to each individual's particular style and interpretation. In this way Dirt Hand's performances are as much determined by the choices his musicians make in that moment on that night on that stage as they are by Arun's song writing.
