Taken from last year's Kulturkampf/Los Von Rom EP, the "Los Von Rom" track, released yesterday, represents a more experimental face of the band. While Totalitarian's debut album De Arte Tragoediae Divinae was a heavy slab of obscure black/death metal infused with some industrial elements and the follow-up Bloodlands EP ventured into the scorched battlefields of furious and uncompromising but somewhat traditional black metal, Kulturkampf/Los Von Rom pushed the limits of the band's sonic bleakness into a different direction again.
"Los Von Rom" is undoubtedly the darkest piece of music created by Totalitarian to date. It unfolds slowly but with no compromise whatsoever evolves into a truly captivating funeral march for the Catholic Church, infused with some top-notch industrial overtones. And the message of this song is clear: Away from Rome! And once you dive deeper into the lyrics of this track (as well as into those of its companion, "Kulturkampf" for which a video was released early this year), you will understand why.
To amplify the "Los Von Rom" experience, the band has now released a lyric video for this very choir, meticulously crafted by Massak Art. Even though it takes patience, time and focus – all of which may be rare commodities these days – to navigate through the grim soundscapes and visuals, the "Los Von Rom" journey is rewarding for those who are not afraid.
"Los Von Rom" launches with a disturbing gale of abrasive electronics and guitar mutilations, punctuated by bombs going off. The guitars scream in agony and groan in misery as those bunker-busting explosions continue. The music is oppressive and apocalyptic, tortured and traumatic. The misery channelled by the mewling leads is unmistakable, and so is the horror in the distorted vocals and the earth-quaking immensity of the surrounding sounds. But the most terrifyingly violent eruptions are still to come when the drums begin blasting, the chords writhe in their affliction, and the vocals reach new heights of suffering and rage.
