COSMIC BURIAL - Sophomore Album Out In September; First Track Unleashed

Purity Through Fire sets the 30th of September as the international release date for Cosmic Burial's highly anticipated second album, ...to the past. Cosmic Burial is the sole work of erstwhile Nachtig and Valosta Varjoon mainman V. V. While those labelmates are undeniably black metal - related-yet-different sides, it must be said - with Cosmic Burial does V. V. strike upon far more distant realms of the imagination, only sparingly related to black metal. In his own words, Cosmic Burial is "ambient/atmospheric music for dreamers about space and time," and over the course of 2019, he recorded two demos under that moniker for the cult Worship Tapes stronghold. Then, in April 2020, the band's staggering debut album, Impakt, was released by Purity Through Fire and stunned all those who witnessed it: a four-song/76-minute work of magisterial darkness and beauty.

Now Cosmic Burial returns with a second full-length, ...to the past, whose title indeed suggests its trajectory. More truncated than its massive predecessor but equally engrossing, ...to the past comprises four songs within 46 minutes and largely sticks to the same immersive formula: while the riffing might superficially suggest black metal by texture, in terms of actual sensations, this swirling, synth-drenched black (w)hole shimmers with a spectral sorrow more sympathetic to fellow stargazers Lustre or Midnight Odyssey. Again, V. V. foregoes vocals entirely, thus further severing ties to strict black metal by definition, but that simply allows these achingly nostalgic towers of spacious sound to crumble even more majestically - and mesmerizingly - down upon the listener. If anything, that sense of space is maximized further here, allowing the ghostly shell of ...to the past to truly encompass its namesake. Galaxies of sorrow await all those who dare to dream.
