Bristol (UK) based avant/dark neo-folk cohort Dead Space Chamber Music have announced their sophomore album, The Black Hours, which will be out on the 3rd of December. The Black Hours carried the band through the strange journey of the pandemic, resonating with the theme and visuals of the album. The entire record is a reference to a medieval illuminated manuscript of the same name, a unique and intimate book of prayers to mark The Liturgy of the Hours, or The Office of the Dead. As the first preview of the album, the band presents the fourth track, "Mari Lwyd / Morfa'r Frenhines (Grey Mare/Queen's Marsh)".
The band states on the track: "This piece combines two traditional melodies: "Mari Lwyd": a Welsh wassailing tradition, sung door to door around Christmas and New Year. The singers, accompanied by the Mari Lwyd ('grey mare') — a hooded horse's skull decorated with bells and ribbons — competitively 'barter' through the medium of song in order to be invited in and given warmth and provisions. Although mysterious in origin, the Mari Lwyd tradition has been revived as an annual opportunity to welcome the ancient into the home and community. "Morfa'r Frenhines": 'Queens Marsh', a traditional Welsh melody in waltz time, commonly played on the harp." Link
