The Northumbrian doom project Arð just unveiled the lyric video "Banner Of The Saint" as the second single taken from the debut album, Take Up My Bones, which has been scheduled for release on the 18th of February 2022 via Prophecy Productions. The lyric video "Banner Of The Saint" is based upon the outline of the seventh-century Anglo-Saxon pectoral cross made of gold and garnet, which is believed to have been owned by St. Cuthbert himself. It is now on display in the treasury of Durham Cathedral.
"One of the lasting impacts of the life of Cuthbert was the use of the symbol from his altar cloth by people throughout Northumbria", explains musical and lyrical mastermind Mark Deeks. "There was an increasing tendency for people to believe that by displaying the cross of St. Cuthbert, they would be protected. A legend tells of the Prior of Durham Abbey having a visitation by the saint the night before the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346. St. Cuthbert advised the prior to take the linen altar cloth and use it as a banner on the battlefield and thereby placing the monks under his protection. This is what the song 'Banner of the Saint' is about."
The theme that has inspired mastermind Mark Deeks would easily fit into the black metal mould were it not for the holy man. This particularly harsh style has a long history in the wake of Bathory's pioneering works of being deeply rooted in the native traditions of their homelands. Listen now to, and watch the beautifully crafted clip below. In case that you've missed the first single "Burden Foretold", it's available together with more album details over HERE. Link
