Belgian gothic doom metal band Hyldr has recently self-released its debut album, Order Of The Mist, in digital format. The band's unique style of music is heavily influenced by the rich melodies of old folktales and Norse mythology, which is evident in the lyrics and storytelling aspect of the album.
The album's story is centred around a young supernatural girl from Hokkaido who becomes trapped in a world of deadly Norse mythology. The songs on the album are not arranged in chronological order but rather slice up the story like a dissected corpse. The orchestrated guitar duets and vocal choirs bring the characters to life while the drums and bass drive the mist forward, making the listener feel like they are a part of the story.
One of the most striking aspects of the album is its title, Order Of The Mist. The title refers to rulers of the underworld in Nebelwood Forest, where the shape-shifting Huldra folk have the power to bring back the dead. This occult order uses the mist to manipulate the realms of humans and force them to fight a never-ending battle. The idea of the mist having some kind of order is an intentional paradox, which adds to the eerie and mysterious nature of the album.
The band's guitarist Vincent notes that they recorded, mixed, and mastered the album at Wavelight Factory, which gave them ample time to experiment with percussive elements and arrangements. He also adds that they did not use choir plugins for vocals - all voices were recorded by Lady IX, which adds to the album's authenticity. Overall, Order Of The Mist is an intriguing and captivating debut album that showcases the band's unique style of music and storytelling. It's a must-listen for fans of gothic doom metal and those interested in exploring the world of Norse mythology through music.
