French avant-garde black metal band Abduction has just unveiled a music video for their cover song of Mylène Farmer's classic "Allan", which closes the band's new album, Toutes Blessent La Dernière Tue, out this Friday, 1 December, via Finisterian Dead End and Frozen Records.
"This cover - the very first we ever worked on - happened in a very fast and spontaneous way", comments singer François Blanc. "It was arranged and recorded in a remarkably short amount of time!"
"Mylène Farmer has always been one of my favorite artists", adds guitar player and composer Guillaume Fleury, "and 'Allan' happens to be my favorite song of hers. To our knowledge, no one has ever covered it before!"
And as if turning an 80s pop song into a black metal piece wasn't enough of a challenge on its own, the quartet decided to film its first-ever video to illustrate the song. "It has always been a dream of mine to direct a movie", explains Guillaume Fleury. "Writing, shooting, and editing this video was one of the most rewarding and thrilling experiences of my entire life!"
Taking place inside a castle in which classical movies had been shot before (including Jacques Demy's Peau d'Âne/1970, featuring Jean Marais and Catherine Deneuve), this video contains multiple references to Mylène Farmer's entire body of work and pays tribute to the filmography of movie directors such as Marcel Carné (The Devil's Envoys) or Jean Cocteau (Beauty And The Beast).
Recorded, mixed and mastered in Brussels, at Déhà's Opus Magnum Studio, with whom the band has been collaborating for almost ten years, the follow-up to the band's critically lauded second album Jehanne shows how much Abduction has grown over the last three years, both in terms of musicianship and songwriting. "I think we've never been that direct and catchy on an album before, while staying true to our trademarks: changes within the frame of the songs themselves, and rich arrangements", says vocalist François Blanc.
As usual, Toutes Blessent La Dernière Tue features a classic painting as the cover artwork (this time borrowed from the works of Hubert Robert, a French painter of the 18th century who specialized in landscapes), however, this time, the lyrics explore very different topics. "We don't want to be perceived as a 'concept-band'", says guitarist Guillaume Fleury. "This album talks about different themes, such as the way the 'new' world treats the soldiers that are coming back from the First World War, or the discoveries of navigators and plane pilots, as well as more contemporary topics such as personal development, old age and the way our society envisions the way our elders live their final remaining years. There's also one song that celebrates our love for classic literature, and pays tribute to Edmond Rostand's hero, Cyrano De Bergerac..."
