Montréal (Canada)-based dark folk/ambient artist Alllison Burik will release on the 2nd of February 2024 her debut solo album entitled Realm. This album is inspired by figures from myths, folktales, and world history.
Alison comments: "I find strength and comfort in their stories, feeling my modern identity validated by their ancient ways of being. Above all else, this album celebrates the many ways of being human."
Alllison Burik's debut solo full-length Realm sees this multifaceted musician-composer blending a plethora of influences and approaches into an engrossing and mythologically informed whole, inspired by women and non-binary characters throughout folktales, lore, and real-world history. The atmosphere is the clear driving force behind this set of nine pieces; Burik superimposes textural phrases of alto sax and bass clarinet, threading in their limpid vocals, field recordings, subtle electronic treatments and even guitar (both from Burik themself and their Umbrella Pine collaborator Magdalena Abrego).
One of the tracks, "Heiemo og Nykkjen", is already available for streaming and you can listen right below. "Heiemo og Nykkjen" is a nod to Alllison Burik's Nordic heritage and offers a haunted arrangement of ancient Norwegian song featuring reeds, voice, and subtle digital glimmer that softly illuminates its tenebrous expanses.
