Srd, which means wrath if translated from Slovenian into English, is a black metal/black'n'roll band from Slovenia. The band was formed in June 2016 in the dark endless plains of Slovenian region Prekmurje, and just over eight months, they released their first full length album, Smrti Sel (messenger of death), through the Slovenian record label On Parole. The project was born out of Goran's studio solo project and quickly attracted four more dark knights, Miha, Dominik, Benjamin and Timo. Srd was very welcomed and acclaimed in the metal scene of Slovenia and due to that was released their debut full-lenght, Smrti Sel.
Smrti Sel is a very well structured concept album, composed of seven tracks around the wrath of God over mankind. One step further, they bring us the exasperation, anger and fury of black metal, blended with this black'n'roll stuff. In my opinion the instruments like a whole, are composed of what I'll call a "light" black metal, extremely influenced by classic metal and a bit by doom and death metal. The sound is quite clean, guitar riffs are genuinely traditional, but without undue distortion. The vocalist is a true raging demon. The anger and the fury transmitted by the vocalist is exciting, engaging and will penetrate in your soul. Magnificent guitar solos here and there just speak for themselves that we deal with a very talented band, bass lines are strong and fortunately enough they don’t come out over the guitars, what is good in my opinion. The other instruments remain homogeneous and really are a backdrop for the vocal, impeccable.
"I Kill Everything I Fuck" is one of the tracks that impressed me most with its dynamic punkish drive. It was not just the content of the lyrics, but the whole song is kind of an anarchic aggression. It is the type of misanthropic music that incites a misanthropic sensation to feel even more disgust over the human race. And even so, the music is contagious and makes you want to hear more and scream at the top of your lungs!
Two tracks on the album are in Slovenian language and one of them is carrying a message from GG Allin (1956-1993), famous punk rocker, known for his extreme and insane performances on stage. The last track on the album, "Soči", is a very good, bleak and murky reinterpretation of famous Slovenian poem written by Simon Gregorčič (1844-1906).
Srd was one of my first encounters with Slovenian black metal scene and I really enjoyed it. And being the first album from an extremely recent band deserves applause. I believe the black metallers worldwide will agree with me if they are open minded enough to accept the fusion of styles proposed by the band. Looking forward to see what comes next from this promising act.
