Blackpool Astronomy, Seattle based dark/shoegaze band's new album Tripping The Mortal Coil, which is streaming in its entirety on Bandcamp. Blackpool Astronomy started as a side project by Jeff McCollough a former founding member of 1990's Seattle shoegaze band Lapis. Blackpool Astronomy has a dark shoegaze sound with a heavy psych bent that has helped create Tripping The Mortal Coil. Jeff plays guitar, Bass and keys in the band along with long time drummer and old friend Ben Madonna creating a sonic dream state with endless delays and modulation. The new album is a collection of songs inspired by the events around them including a tragic loss of Jeff's father to cancer in the period of six months and the grief he was feeling. This has brought a much more open sound which has gotten them high marks from various radio stations, fans and music journalists. The band had been a two piece outfit made up Ben and Jeff in which Jeff was playing all the bass lines at the same time as the guitar and this year they added good friend and classically trained musician Mandy McGee to play bass and sing backing vocals. Since the decision the trio has recorded and performed together at multiple venues. Tripping The Mortal Coil was released on 18th September and you can listen to the album in our Bandcamp player below. Link
