German underground dark music label [aufnahme + wiedergabe] will release on 23rd September a very interesting new compilation entitled The Second Wave. This compilation was compiled by Thomas Thyssen (Pagan Love Songs) and is a must for every true fan of gothic rock music.
So, what's all about that makes it so interesting... Anyone who dismisses continental post-mid-80s efforts in goth and wave – and that’s what it was called over here at the time – as artistically worthless and overall uninteresting due to the allegedly one-dimensional, purely derivative, and clumsy nature of the attempts by over-enthusiastic dilettantes in Merciful Release t-shirts sporting Robert Smith hair at merely emulating the most influential bands is wrong on many, many levels. Let the 23 examples of The Second Wave educate you on that issue in the most delightful way imaginable.
This amazing and strictly limited to 200 copies compilation focuses on German bands emerging at a time when “the scene” was still very much underground, DIY, and tolerant of aesthetic diversity internally, but already in the process of slowly but steadily establishing its own infrastructure and, crucially, allowing for easier access to recording equipment due to considerably lower prices than before.
This compilation is a treasure chest full of gems of (admittedly, but not at all surprisingly) different levels of recording quality, but it’s all been mastered wonderfully by Achim Dreßler (Wellencocktail/New Days Delay) to guarantee maximum listening pleasure throughout.
On The Second Wave you'll find 23 tracks, mostly rare ones, of some of most important bands of the goth rock second wave made in Germany. Some of the featured acts are Love Like Blood, Exedra, The Caves, Catastrophe Ballet, Cryptic Flowers, The House Of Usher, Secret Discovery, Dronning Maud Land, Fallen Apart, Preachers Of Sadness, Morbid Poetry and much more.
The Second Wave is available for orders at this location and in the player below you can already give a listen to some of the tracks. A must! Link
