It’s twenty five years, a quarter of a century, since British black metallers Thus Defiled came screaming into the world, drunk on sacrificial blood and aflame with blasphemy. They cut a blazing path through the black metal underground, releasing a series of unholy, Christ-crushing albums and EPs and sharing the stage with the greatest extreme metal has ever produced - Mayhem, Blasphemy, Rotting Christ, Cradle Of Filth, Dissection, Cannibal Corpse, Immolation and many more.
Exactly a year ago Thus Defiled emerged from the silent shadows, where they had dwelt since 2011’s Swine Of Hades split album (also featuring Taake, Sigh, The Meads Of Asphodel and Evo/Algy) with a deluxe reissue of two of their most sought after releases – Fire Serpent Dawn and A Darker Beauty - brought together under the title An Unhallowed Legacy.
Now Thus Defiled have decided that the time has come to return to the darkness, to slip back into the shadows from whence they came. However demons like these never go quietly, not without one last firestorm unleashed, one last assault on the heavenly gates, one final abomination spawned... So we present to you, A Return To The Shadows, a brand new EP featuring one never before heard original track and four monumental cover versions from Death, Metallica, Morbid Angel and W.A.S.P.; reinterpretations of the songs that first helped inspire the infernal birth of Thus Defiled.
A Return To The Shadows was recorded in Texas, with Tim Bartlett, at Noise Farm Studios, the same team responsible for the magnificent Daemonspawn album – arguably the pinnacle of Thus Defiled’s career. With guest appearances from Mike Browning (Nocturnus, ex-Morbid Angel) and Donn Donni (Vesperian Sorrow) this is a very special final release, from a very special band.
