After the confusion surrounding their debut album, the German experimental rock/metal band Bald Anders returns and will release on 23rd September their second album entitled Spiel. Many comparisons have been drawn, even suggesting that the quartet sounds like “a weird mix between Sólstafir and Helge Schneider”, a famous German comedian. Spiel (“game”), however, shows the band in a more aggressive mode, which is further underlined by Thomas Taube’s (Ascension, Bölzer) impressively powerful production.
Bald Anders transcend stylistic borders with plenty of passion and imagination. Gnarly black metal roots are dug out, yet in the next moment, the band throws in some enchanting folk, only to plow through the wild and dark woods afterwards like a bunch of punks. This adventurous Spiel may be slightly tongue-in-cheek, yet Bald Anders mean business and deliver an album of sterling qualities.
The band comments about the idea behind the album: "One of our general traits is an entirely unintentional, unforced approach to both song and lyric writing. Our second album proves this once more. We play around with ideas, possibilities and style without a specific aim on a field without borders. And do games and the act of playing not lay at the very core of the human being? From simply toying with stones and wood to gambling on your own life. Some might remember from childhood days that games can get serious and acquire an almost sacrosanct meaning. By mostly the simplest means, whole worlds with rules and margins, rooms and attributions are created. Who loses or wins, who advances another round, who has the better cards, who is thrown out or graced by the gods, who won’t be found, who may stay alive? From marbles across parlour games to large arena tournaments: playing means disappointment and triumph, suspense and surprise, hiding and discovery, rules and rule-breaking … and each game, by itself, is different. Everything is possible in games, and in this sense, we play our instruments, constantly inventing or just letting things happen. Arrow and bow are carved, one gets blindfolded, another has to count down, and again another gets the joker... May the games begin, the die is cast, try your luck, anything goes, rien ne va plus, it’s still just a game."
