Band: Trees Of Eternity
Album title: Hour Of The Nightingale
Release date: 11 November 2016
Label: Svart Records
When Finnish guitarist Juha Raivio (Swallow The Sun) and Sweden-based, South African-born singer Aleah Starbridge got together in the studio when Swallow The Sun recorded their seminal album New Moon, and soon after that in 2009 formed an acoustic project Trees Of Eternity, I guess that nobody knew what kind of fate would follow them. You must already know that Aleah died from cancer on 18th April 2016 at age 39, right after she recorded vocal lines for the debut album, Hour Of The Nightingale. This album is pure melancholia and sadness, it reflects that beauty in darkness, it's one of the most emotional albums you might have heard recently, it's a sound of a wounded siren from the spirit world, a message to the ones who were left behind, it's a personal drama, full of pain and beyond fight for subsistence, an intimate deposition of otherworldly sensations that will forever remain in our hearts.

Band: Devilment
Album title: II-The Mephisto Waltzes
Release date: 18 November 2016
Label: Nuclear Blast Records
The Mephisto Waltzes is a cracked and crazed rollercoaster ride through a twisted universe populated by grotesque monsters, deviant freaks and irresistible, ghoulish heroines. The second offering of Devilment features nine tracks full of gothy/horror metal with a lot of creepy atmospheric soundscapes. It's a haunting and often captivatingly extreme, often with some black metal in it, but not only, there are plenty of NWOBHM and typical hard rock hooks, and all this manifests in great dynamics that The Mephisto Waltzes offers. It's nice to hear and see that Devilment are becoming such an entity on its own. Everything shines even more because of great production that adds another degree of heaviness to the whole thing. Devilment became with this album a wholly distinctive unholy force, with an intuitive understanding of the value of shattering every mirror and stepping through into an alternate dimension where rulebooks smoulder and hell’s gates are thrown open for an unhinged but celebratory knees-up, and certainly a genuine force to be reckoned with.

Band: Near Earth Orbit
Album title: Mission E.D.E.N.
Release date: 21 October 2016
Label: Solar Lodge
Mission E.D.E.N. is the last part of the trilogy which started in 2015 with the stunning album End Of All Existence and continued later with Trans Neptunian Objects. This trilogy is a sonic movie which requires your intelect, it's a perfect mixture of post-apocalypse, paranoia and fiction. In the end everything is left to your imagination. Musically Mission E.D.E.N. is a very strong album, it actually starts in the similar vein where Trans Neptunian Objects left off, and so it offers one hell of heavy intensity, dense and turbulent sound that can't be really properly categorized, but it's also highly atmospheric, sometimes soothing, even emotional and absolutely cinematic. It might not be so coherent as the first album and not so dense and raw as it was the second chapter, but it's much more atmospheric and like said before cinematic.

Band: Sorrowful Land
Album title: Of Ruins...
Release date: 7 November 2016
Label: Solitude Productions
Welcome to an epic doomy journey! Songs are raging from more traditonal doom metal to a pure funeral doom. The band is hailing form Ukraine, a country which is not really known for doom bands, but it's more than great to see that they have promising acts there. Crushing, highly melodic, yet dark and deep, the band marches forward slowly and steady. They are building up one hell of a really nice energy around itself, like a wall of fragile and elegant sounds. With beautiful clean melodies and a clear idea where things are heading the band presents six tracks of pure crushing epic melancholic doom, this is everything you could ever want from a doom metal album, really, this record is a pure pile of gold for all doom metal fans. The songs tend to stick to very typical slow doom tempo, but still there's more than enough going on that you would ever expect. Sorrowful Land will clearly left a mark in the scene for sure with this stunning release.

Band: Sabled Sun
Album title: 2148
Release date: 8 November 2016
Label: Cryo Chamber
Sabled Sun is, at this point, one of the most well known sci-fi infused dark ambient projects out there. 2148 is the fourth chapter and the fourth year in the story of a man who has awoken from a long cryo-sleep to find that his planet has been abandoned. Each year or album in the series reveals a few more details and possibilities to be taken into account. Sabled Sun is the side-project of Simon Heath, who is most well known as Atrium Carceri and owner of the Cryo Chamber label. This year's album 2148 takes the story to it most surprising place yet. As an individual album 2148 is brilliant. From beginning to end, we hear some of the best music yet within the Sabled Sun story. There are plenty of things here to keep each type of listener happily entertained. Now, we can only wait to find out if this is the end of the line for the protagonist or if Simon Heath still has more ideas up his sleeve for the continuation of his protagonist as he moves toward the stars, the second great unknown in his journey.
