IN VEIL - Exclusive Streaming Premiere Of Debut EP + Interview

Terra Relicta web magazine has teamed up with the Canadian gothic/industrial/synth-pop act In Veil for an exclusive premiere of their debut EP Lunatic. In Veil formed after a fateful encounter in Toronto’s underground music scene in 2019 by Ady Cernea (instrumentals) and Haysi Veil (vocals). Tomorrow, 6 August is the official release date for In Veil's debut release Lunatic, an unusual offering of the dark and macabre as it hasn’t been heard before.

Drawing heavily on the folklore of their countries of origin, (Ady: Transylvania and Haysi: Cuba), gothic influences and a variety of genre styles, In Veil, have been making a name for themselves. With the assistance of guitarist and songwriter, Michael Falcore of The Birthday Massacre, co-producing In Veil, the duo’s sound was elevated to another level. In 2020 In Veil won the prestigious Factor Artists Development grant, which is sponsored by the Government of Canada. Dark pop vibes arise out of eerie synth lines contrasted with avant-garde vocals. From the anthemic pop choruses of "Salome", through to heavily distorted guitars of "Spider", the duo explores an alluring array of musical and lyrical themes with a hauntingly dark twist. Hip hop made gothic is on offer in "Slow Lane". The catchy heavy rhythms and hard-hitting percussion empower the momentum forward while Haysi’s vocals add a seductive mood. Read now a short interview with Ady and Haysi done exclusively for this occasion.

Interview with: In Veil (Haysi and Ady)
Conducted and edited by: Tomaz

Tomaz: In Veil is a new name on the scene, a refreshing one, so please tell us more about the band itself? Do you have any musical experiences from before?
In Veil: Thank you for saying we're refreshing, we certainly try to be. The band was started here in Toronto, Ontario. We are more of a duo than a band. We (Haysi and Ady) came together with the goal of smashing genre rules in alternative music. We were both fed up with all the expectations that come with metal, industrial and goth music. We wanted to make something different. Ady comes from a gothic doom metal background. Haysi comes from an alternative pop and rock background but before that, she was a student of classical music.

Tomaz: Even if a new name, and still without an official release until now (except for the first single "Lunatic"), you already got quite a lot of fans and followers. What do you think is the reason, and who is your target audience?
In Veil: Because Ady was a name in the scene, I think his past musical successes really helped contribute to the initial attention. Moreover, once people actually heard our music they were really impressed by how different it was. We didn't sound like anything our music scene had put out before.

Tomaz: Your debut, the Lunatic EP, will be out tomorrow (6 August). How are you satisfied with it, and how do you describe your music?
In Veil: Yeah, we are super satisfied with it. We are looking forward to developing our style even further but we couldn't have asked for more, especially for a debut. We would describe our music as genre-bending, catchy, upbeat, and creepy.

Tomaz: On the title track you collaborated with guest singer Sam Astaroth, who's best known from the extreme metal scene. How it came to this collaboration and how it was working with Sam?
In Veil: We've known Sam for many years now. We knew he was interested in doing more rap metal stuff and expanding beyond extreme metal so we asked him if he'd like to collaborate on a track. It took us about two months to finalize the song but once it was finished we invited him over to our home studio. The finished product was done and recorded in two days. We were all so happy with the final product.

Tomaz: In Veil is a duo, but an important part of the group is Michael Falcore of the amazing The Birthday Massacre. One more thing that needs some explanation...
In Veil: Yeah, we are very fortunate that Michael took an interest in our music. We have a deep-seated respect for the man and his musicianship. He heard our music and was impressed then he asked us if we'd like his help with the sound. Obviously, we said YES! I think our collaboration with him has been the highlight of our musical careers thus far. It really makes us feel like we have a chance in this competitive industry.

Tomaz: The musical genre of In Veil is hard to put into a category. Of course, there's gothic, synth-pop, industrial,... but there's present folklore from your countries of origin, Transylvania and Cuba. How do you describe it?
In Veil: We would describe it as a big f-you to genre rules and expectations. Art is art and having elitists, many of whom who don't actually create music, dictate what is and what isn't valuable is frankly insulting to us artists. It stops us from being able to develop and grow. So even though we have elements of the heavy music we love, we like to incorporate just a little bit of everything. Hell, we even have an RnB-type track on the EP. We want to prove that you can incorporate anything into heavy music and it will still be heavy and fun.

Tomaz: Some words about the title Lunatic, and about the lyrics? Any special messages?
In Veil: Yeah, Lunatic was named after the madness that was 2020. While we were locked up during Quarantine, it felt as if we were watching the world dissolve into madness. The track also touches on the BLM protests and the importance of the message in BLM. It also talks about those denying the existence of COVID etc. A lot of our rage, but also humour went into the creation of that track. People are messed up and sometimes you just have to make art when you can't change the world around you, right?

Tomaz: Any last words?
In Veil: We are so excited to finally be releasing our debut! Thanks to everyone involved, most notably Michael Falcore from The Birthday Massacre and Sam Astaroth from Astaroth Incarnate! You are our dream team!

Now, we invite you to give a listen to the fantastic debut offering from In Veil in the player below. Dance, scream, and be haunted by these mind-blowing newcomers!
