Black Shroud's debut release has been garnering a small but notable bit of attention in the month or so since it's been out. Is this Ohio based black/death metal project worth your time? Let's take a look.
Opener "Tower Of Silence" shoves it's way in as an ominous, tense threat before blasting into three tracks in a row of vicious gore soaked rage only to have the listener come out the other side to find the same carnage turned up to eleven. Track two, "Immolation Of Souls", is surprising melodic when not playing at Napalm Death levels of hostility and "Mellified Man" is a Vital Remains lovers wet dream. "Inhuman" rounds out the trilogy of steady horror before "Endocannibal" blasts away in crippling scourge to end Death Culture.
"Endocannibal" is the perfect closer, taking the best parts of the four previous songs to create one remorseless Frankenstein monster. It also gives the album this odd feeling of some morbid reverse Fibonacci sequence. Constantly spiraling into a self cannibalistic implosion of raw brutality.
After listening to this album multiple times, the biggest thing I take away is that, despite being heavily influenced by more established extreme metal acts, this is still a debut release with enough originality sprinkled throughout to show that Black Shroud have the potential to carve there very own sound in a few more years. It's intense. But not lacking in depth. Behemoth fans finding themselves underwhelmed by I Loved You At Your Darkest would be wise to seek refuge under this particular shroud.
