It's no secret that nowadays the gothic rock scene is falling in a dark abyss more than ever before. After the glorious 80s ended the great old ones were succeeded by many bands that had their lesson learnt. As years were passing by gothic rock was embracing a more modern aspect and even more traditional yet skillful acts appeared up to the first half of the 00s. Well, in these murky waters with no sign of hope on the horizon Deathcamp Project has risen to the surface with their second attempt, Painthings. To tell the truth, I kind of enjoyed the pun on the title and it paces really well with the cover artwork.
So, what makes Deathcamp Project important to the scene? All of the answers lie deep inside their sound corridors. First of all they pay respect to the roots of gothic rock without being afraid to blend these vibes with a more modern sound. The music never fails to depict a danceable aura whereas it never lacks in terms of emotion. The vocals prevail; not only does Void possess a crystal-clear melodic voice but he also tends to express himself in a slightly husky manner whenever needed. The role of the guitars and the electronics/synths remains balanced and even when one of them is on the surface, when they blend together they don't surpass one another neither in terms of production nor song-writing/instrumentation. The rhythm section lends the required groove and holds tight the composition by simply lending the necessary power that won't bury the sound of Deathcamp Project. From the nearly heart-rending "Predestination" to the dynamic "Too Late" and from the groovy yet sensational "Cold The Same" and the rest of the songs of the album, everyone of them keeps the interest of the listener at high levels from beginning to end.
Well-conceived melody and well-expressed emotions not only are the fuel that gives strength to the band to keep up the good work, but also sends shivers down the spine of the dedicated audience.
