I know that many of you will think that I'm reviewing some kind of rap or at least some kind of aggressive punk or hard core album, but it's not like that at all, even if the name of the band applys to that. Here we deal with kind of emotionaly charged cold wave, with some post-punk and goth rock influences. The duo was formed last year, but the two already gained some experiences in the band The Skeletonz. This self-titled EP is the first studio release by this French formation and already shows a huge potential.
Five songs up here are elegant, nicely flowing tunes. There is a lot of that typical French atmosphere, almost dreamy soundscapes and well balanced compositions. I was taken away by ethereal and comfortable vocals of Ophélie, that are similar to those of Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins or Julianne Regan of All About Eve. I think that without such a stunning and emotionaly passionate vocal performance Stupid Bitch Reject won't be that interesting. Right, the sole music is also very emotional and mellow, the guitar lines can often be associated with those most melancholic The Cure lines and somehow alternative compositional approach make me think of And Also The Trees. I should stop searching for outside references, because the two are offering one hell of great melodies and captivating moments. Some shoegaze elements also work fine and give a lot of depth. The tempo is slow, with rare uplifting moments. Nicely used, very gentle and danceable pop rhytms give some warmth, otherwise this music has kind of coldness in it. Electronic elements that are pushed in the background are there just to fullfil the musical spectrum, still used wisely to replenish the output. The refrain of "Only" and the whole track "How It Tastes" are hidden gems that must be discovered by all who like very intimate and emotional music.
Stupid Bitch Reject did music to excite your deepest and most personal emotions, it's the music that can be enjoyed when you feel all alone, desperate and want to get some comfort, but is also fine like a leisured background wall of sound to chill you. The only problem is that the songs don't differ enough between each other and I strongly suggest them to add some dynamics into music. Here's no problem with that, but when the two are going to make a full lenght album, I believe that this must be taken under consideration.
