Already with the first tackts of the opening song "Candlelight Vigil" we get aware that this Italian band will offer something really obscure, gloomy, and that's exactly what we get through the seven featured tracks on Into The Mist's debut album. The band is a newcomer on the scene as they were formed in March 2013, but members, vocalist MassAnder, guitarist LilAngel and bassist SaintAngel are active in the music scene since late eighties, yeah there's also a drum machine named Miss Engelya. Ok, we have experienced musicians here, playing traditional gothic rock, pretty much influenced by the 80s and early 90s well known herd of bands which defined the gothic rock style as we know it today. Album in question has all the necessary things to make an appeal to all lovers of calm dark soundscapes with some twists.
Predominant mellow sound on ITM is a successful attempt of delivering the most dark, at ease, yet confortable and warm gothic rock, it has a necessary dose of emotion and brings satisfactory musical skill. Typical melancholic guitar lines as expected with some sparkling grips, bass lines full of reverb to move your soul and quite strong, sometimes very interesting drum beats are not to be criticised, contrary, they blend so well together with MassAnders mature, deep and velvety baritone voice. Occasionally used ambiental electronics and synths give the depth and atmosphere, and of course, sounds of strings and symphonic elements are certainly a very welcome bonus in for example the amazing "Will You Shine In My Darkness". Somehow doomy atmosphere with martial elements and some heavy guitar insertions on "Soldiers From The White Side" as well gives an interesting experience, not to mention by Fields Of The Nephilim influenced, ten minutes long, epic, slowly evolving gothic rock adventure as it is the closing one, "Glassed Eyed Shadow", and its shivery, tremenduously captivating part where MaasAnder sings "Sun won't rise for the land of shadows / Falling stars are not for the undead / Neon lights are not for glass eyes", in a word, even if on this album would be only this track it will be worth getting your hands upon it. I can't forget a bit more vivacious, with elements similar to the English legends The Mission, "Devil My Angel", which is the only track up here that can make you move your body.
All songs are melodic, slow paced with little or almost no upbeats, and it's for sure that the listener must be in a certain mood to enjoy fully this album, yeah it's not for your everyday relaxation, even if it's not a complex work. I only miss a bit more of passion as it can became a bit monotonous or drowsy, especially the first half of it. Nevertheless, this is another good example that gothic rock of today is pretty much alive, kicking and has still a lot to offer and Into The Mist should be proud of making such a debut album. It's not really shining of originality but is maybe one of the best in this musical sector coming from the land of pizza and spaghetti.
