Dark electro scene in Russia is really blossoming lately and Encono, a young band which started in 2007 under the name of Illusion are one of the very promising representatives of it. To put the cards straight, this project headlined by a guy named Loki, is more oriented into live performances than anything else. You know, in their line-up they have a lady named Jilt who is responsible just for a stage support and of course to excite the male side of the audience with her presence. This release entitled E.D., (I don't know for which words those two letters stand for) is their debut release and shows some potential, but at the same time I must be true to myself and say that it's not something special.
After rather interesting, horror kind perverse introduction into the first track "Adios, puta!" we get bombarded with typical electro/industrial/EBM beats. Vocals are harsh, shouted, sometimes at the very limit of black metal shrieks, but too much linear. Pretty simple and with some lack of dynamics, but othervise with an interesting atmospheric synths here and there the first two tracks didn't make any bigger impression, neither from compositional side and even less from the point of originality, even though I believe that with a good sound this must be an interesting experience listening on a live show, as the sound is pretty dense. The whole atmosphere is quite suffocating and it's clear that the guys know how to make a nice danceable rhythms. A real surprise comes with the last, rather melancholic track "Confession Of The Innocent". Slowed down tempo, crushing wall of sound, great synths, fantastic electronic imputs and diabolic vocals make the thing worth giving it more spins,... it's kinda doom-electro-ambient if you ask me. It's a track that with just a bit better production and just a little bit more work on it could be a real masterpiece, thus it's a good start for the band.
Yes, we must consider that this EP is just a demo release and some things could be forgiven, as it's a not so good production, but more than that I'm afraid that they lack in ideas. With the exception of the last track everything else is rather boring and I strongly suggest to the band that they should work more on the dynamics of the songs and not beign just another copy of so many other dark-electro bands and projects out there. If you are into harsh dark electronics than give a try to Encono, maybe it's something that you'll enjoy in, I certainly did in one third if it.
