After years of silence the members of the shamanistic/ritualistic black metal project Hypothermia drops their long awaited album. Hypothermia features in the line-up members of Lifelover and Kall and is probably best known as an underground band from Sweden among the darker kinds of people. The singer Kim Carlsson is notoriously known for fronting Lifelover since its very birth, a project I would feel more at home with. Nevertheless Hypothermia is an interesting band and I admit I'm not a type of person who has put much effort into listening to their previous work.
The sound is raw and dark, but really smoothly made, it gives the impression that the band is actually performing live right infront of you, in a way sharing something personal, honest and unique. Those smooth calm melodic lines really shine through well in their music, sometimes it feels kinda jazzy, sometimes doomy, even mystical, melancholic... Svartkonst is based around more ambiental instrumentals, then add to that also use of some psychedelic violins on a couple of occasions and you'll get the picture. I think the vocals could be added a lot higher even though I know it's about focusing on the music, but with such amazing vocalist it's a shame not to hear his voice.
I find it hard to describe and really explain well how I feel about this record due to the fact I miss the vocals. All of the featured tracks are good instrumentals, but I think having vocals would made everything better. Every single track has a very atmospheric feel to them, still it feels that without Kim's vocals the sound is not quite the same, or even possesses the same feel. Like said before, the instrumental compositions are good, there's no doubt about it, but they feel very empty, there's almost no life inside, a bit too monothone, but hey, let's see what comes next! It's true as many state that this kind of band or music is not meant for everyone and they are true about that. Still I think that the fans of Forgotten Woods, Lifelover, Kall, early Forgotten Tomb and of early Shining will find something for theirselves.
