Dronny Darko, the drone ambient artist from Kiev (Ukraine) is known for his abyssal drones, combined with eerie field-recordings, samples and voices. His previous release, Outer Tehom (released in November 2014 by Cryo Chamber), was quite spine-chilling. Outer Tehom was meant to invoke the elder gods forgotten in time, and it surely did this, bringing with it the vilest of creatures.
Earth Songs is a collaboration between Dronny Darko and protoU, a new-comer to the Cryo Chamber label. Earth Songs follows our planet earth from the first explosion, 13.8 billion years ago, to humanity’s final ascent from Earth in 2135. This is a huge change in direction from Dronny Darko's last release, showing the dynamics and promise not only of Dronny Darko, but also of protoU.
"Explosion [13.8 billion years ago]" begins just as you would expect, with a devastating blast that reverberates throughout existence and slowly gives way to a spark of life. As this life takes hold the album begins its steady progress through Earth's history and future, as humanity will remember it. What was once chaos, deep drones and roars, is now peaceful, even serene. Brooks are babbling and birds gently chirping in the backdrop as creatures take their first steps on Earth.
Earth Songs gently progresses through the years, as insects come to life, drones are a constant and gentle meditation. "Riparian Forest [300 million years ago]" is the most meditative and relaxation inducing track on the album, a track perfect for just putting on repeat and going to sleep. "Riparian Forest [300 million years ago]" is my most highly recommended track on the album, I'm constantly drawn back to it since my first listen.
Beauty and serenity are only temporary on Earth, "Extinction [66 million years ago]", covers the end of a planet, ruled by reptiles and the beginning of a new hope. "Primate [50 million years ago]" is another relaxing track full of gently drifting drones and the sounds of life as an early primate may have felt it. The last two tracks cover life as we know it, or may imagine it being very soon. From the peaceful beginnings of our near future, a deep disturbance creeps forth followed by a departure, the departure of humanity from its mother, Earth. We leave Earth Songs drifting into a dark and mysterious new existence. Life as we know it has changed, for the lucky ones at least...
Dronny Darko & protoU leave us wondering what will happen next! I'm excited to know the future of not only humanity, but also these two wonderful artists. Earth Songs is a dynamic and highly recommended dark ambient album for those who prefer something more relaxing, but still packing a punch.
