Thyrgrim, a band from Germany is back with their fifth album and offer ten tracks of very intense, raw and sometimes fast form of black metal. It seems that the band must be in their creative peak as their previous album, Erwachen, was released only one year ago. Besides eight new tracks the band re-recorded two tracks from their past records and included them boldly into the tracklist; one is "Hass", previously released on Niedergang (2008), and the second one is "Wenn es schneit" from their debut album Winterhall (2006).
Dekaden opens up with a very dark, cold and heavy sound, along with some high pitched screams, before going into a very fast and raw black metal direction that also utilizes a great amount of blast beats. Thyrgrim masterfully bring forward a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, that are here and there enriched with some demonic and melodic guitar leads.
Thyrgrim's music is heavily rooted in the 90s second wave black metal style. Many of guitar riffs bring into the palette marvelous depressive sounding melodies at certain times and after a while the band starts mixing in a good way both modern and old school influences, just give a listen to the infernal "Die Seuche Mensch". All of the instruments on the recording have a very powerful and well recorded/produced sound. As well it's nice to hear occasional use of acoustic guitars on a few tracks along with few seconds of spoken word parts before returning back to a heavier musical direction. A couple of tracks are quite long, almost epic compositions with a huge gloomy atmosphere and rather depressive feeling, like is for example the fantastic "Gezeiten".
Thyrgrim plays a dynamic and direct kind of black metal with strong references leading towards pagan metal, that is still recognisably German, even though there's present a considerable amount of typical nordic elements. Thyrgrim are since their beginning considered as a strong part of the German black metal underground. All of the lyrics are written in German, and the band doesn't use those typical for the genre satanic symbolism to express themselves, they rather use basic feelings like hate, anger, grief and depression. In my opinion Thyrgrim showed with this album their true talent, that they are one those bands that is devoted to their own thing by creating this homage to the old times by not sounding averagely, and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album.
