The re-emerged Portland (USA) based quartet Graves At Sea is back with a new full-lenght, after issuing a series of highly regarded demos and splits, plus going through some line-up changes. Well, Graves At Sea scored some beautiful tunes on this album, a long awaited one, in the making for almost 15 years, but still full of hype. The Curse That Is is without any doubt a well put together album, it's full of groove and special attitude, it's a well sorted mix od doom, drone and sludge, with a Down's Nola vibe which is nothing but a plus for me, I spot a very strong personality, but with some references to Kylesa, Eyehategod and Electric Wizard that doesn't hurt either. The songwriting is very well shaped, songs are very solid and well played, the production is a little bit too polished for the genre, but fits very well with the melodic content. I really enjoyed the atmosferic addition to the granitic riffs, such is violin, cello and female voices. For me the climax on this album comes with the main riff on "Dead Eyes". If you are a fan of High On Fire, Kylesa, Electric Wizard and YOB to name a few, then this is a must have album for you. I really hope to see them live very soon, because those songs must be a blast when played on stage.
