The debut EP from Dutch trio Orewoet is set to be unleashed on the 16 September, 2016. The opening guitar riff sets the mood for the old school black metal madness that will follow. This release is highly riff-based with a solid guitar groove and drumming throughout with constantly changing song structures and drum patterns. The vocals are very choked up and harsh fitting in perfectly behind the guitars and fortifying the overall deluge of darkness.
Black metal has expanded and taken on many forms over the years since it first rained chaos down on unsuspecting mortals. Afrodisiacum Der Vroomheid (Aphrodisiac of piety) is a return to the original form with "no gimmicks, no bullshit, only pure black metal devotion".
This impious Dutch triad have crafted five tracks that move and change continuously throughout. The EP certainly lives up to it's name 'Aphrodisiac of piety', there are hints of hard rock and heavy metal which tend to bring out the beast in the souls and bodies of men and women alike with a more then casual lust for sin, debauchery and bad behaviour. One may be tempted to listen to this EP while taming some wild shrew with a pelvic thrust or two, banging on the anvil hammer and tongs like a determined blacksmith seeking the perfected scythe with which to slay all adversaries without remorse. The invocation of hypnotic rhythms and mantras will tempt even the most reserved and modest of Eves to throw caution to the wind and take a bite from forbidden apples knowing full well the consequences.
The blast beat has a tendency to be over utilised in some black metal works without a decent build up to the dark spray. Orewoet is quite conscious of the tool of anticipation before reaching peak fury and mayhem. The surprise breakdown is also not lost on this band as they implement drastic tempo changes backed with off-beat and simple 2-4 drumming sometimes with tonal changes in the guitars and captivating atmospheric riffage. This is the sort of music that would be probably be best listened to live; or at full volume driving though a winding road at full speed surrounded by fog and snow covered mountains.
The EP is well produced (not that many black metal devotees give a shit about that) with a guitar heavy solid mix, and decent execution from all parties concerned especially the drums. There are no major complaints about this release, but I feel they have not yet reached their full potential and separated themselves distinctly from other bands in the genre. There is still some room for a more refined sound and a more sinister dark atmosphere. Also the vocals are mostly unchanging throughout and some tracks closely resemble each other, but all and all this is a great first release and it will be interesting to hear what these maniacs from the Netherlands come up with next.
There's no school like the old school and Orewoet seek to challenge the headmaster. The Horny Goat Weed and ground rhinoceros horn of Black metal will soon be available... Afrodisiacum Der Vroomheid.
