Classical guitar and piano give the tone of the songs of the band 1476 that began the career inserted strongly in the genre folk/Indie. The first album, Smoke In The Sky, released in 2010 is totally folk with tribal nature. It's a hippie stuff, no offenses. Then the next album, Edgar Allan Poe: A Life Of Hope And Despair, is a fine example of the evolution of the band, where elements of gothic side intertwine with what appears to be an announced farewell to the folk style that the band adopted at the beginning. In my opinion this is the best album 1476 did so far when it comes to the gothic style. It's a dense album, extremely melancholic, loaded with dark emotions. This is Gothic.
The 5th and the newest album by the band, New Wildwood/The Nightside is actually a reissue of the anonymous album and the EP released in 2012. The band is young and still in development. The style, although it mixes several genres at the beginning, is crystallizing in a very interesting and melodic genre, which is what we can call dark indie rock. At first listen an untrained ear could get confused and "think" that it is gothic rock, no, not at all the style is this.
Wildwood/The Nightside is an surprising piece of music, mostly because it is visible the growth of the band in the whole of the work and also individually when we analyze music by music. It's dark, atmospheric, creating a surreal realm of dreams, gloomy counterpoint to dense, moving, and sometimes a little abrasive sound. Undoubtedly, a dark indie rock album. Although dense, it is also light and emotional, without being depressive, it's beautiful and sweet. Undoubtedly another option for those tired of all this depressive gothic style variations.
Wildwood/The Nightside is a very original and versatile work of two musicians who shape this project, Robb Kavjian and Neil DeRosa. The band that is from New England (USA) is influenced by the winter weather of its steep streets, covered with mist. This image is visible in the band's songs. The group is original, different and unique. The only "if not" to this album, is the female voice. On some tracks like "Watchers" and “Horse Dysphoria”, this voice would need more excitement, emotion. The impression I have is that the person is reading and this is not good. The music is saved due to the excellent instrumentation and by the voice of original members. I hope that the next album will bring forth even more and more of this dark indie style and leave behind completely those silly folk elements which are still present in the tracks like "Bohemian Spires" and "Know Thyself, Dandy". Congrats to Robb Kavjian and Neil DeRosa.
