Severance is a gothic rock band from Monterrey, Mexico. Formed in 2013 by Rul Delirio (voice, guitar), Carlo “Bam Bam” Vargas (guitar), Hugo “Altered beast” Guerrero (bass) and Marco Soma (drums), they have got a good reception, especially in Latin America. Strongly influenced by the 80s and 90s gothic rock acts, they try to shape their own style adding more influences from different genres like death rock, gothic metal or alternative rock.
Thresholds was released in February through the Brazilian record label Deepland Recods. I have to confess that the first time I listened to a song from them, they didn't convince me but fortunately I give them a second opportunity and it was worth the effort.
The album is characterized by magnificent guitars, the most prominent element of their sound. “The Escapist” is an exceptional gothic rock guitar driven song, clearly influenced by the Spanish band Héroes del Silencio. The single “New Cult” is another example of their style, with a catchy chorus, becoming a dancefloor hit. “Need you back” is possibly the most death rock oriented song of the album, with reminiscences of the masterpiece Only Theatre Of Pain by Christian Death. If you are a Fields Of The Nephilim fan, don’t miss “Asphyxia”, strongly influenced by the wild rhythm of the Nephs song “Phobia”. The album ends with the remix of the Finnish band Two Witches, delivering a more sophisticated sound to the song “The Day That The Sun Never Sets”.
Severance has a promising future in the dark scene, in my opinion they should polish some aspects of their sound: the overall production should be more bombastic and sometimes the voice should be more integrated with the rest of the instruments. Anyway, Thresholds is a really good album. If you are into gothic rock, you shouldn’t miss this band, they perform an outstanding music that will captivate you.
