Sinlust began their journey on the dark paths of one of the most prolific musical styles in 2008 in Brittany (France). Chris in Lust (guitars) and Firefrost (vocals) were the founders and soon joined forces with Infernh (drums) and Rain Wolf (bass). This French epic black metal band intends with their music evidently to contribute to the development of the already amazing French dark metal scene, creating songs that mix the roots of black metal with new obscure tendencies without decharacterizing the raw black metal style. This guys dedicated a lot of time until finally releasing their first concept album in 2011, titled Snow Black. That album was self released and came to fruition from a literary work by Firefrost. The singer, under the pen name Nicolas Skinner, wrote a novel published by Nats Editions, called ‘Noire Neige’ (meaning ‘Snow Black’ in French).
Encouraged by comments from critics who reviewed the first album, the band started the second project. Another concept album that follows the story of Snow Black, is also inspired by the continuation of the novel and is entitled Sea Black. The second album has 8 long songs, none of them less than 5 minutes, which gives us a total running time of more than 60 minutes! The songs were recorded in 2015 at Slab Sound studio under the care of Gnew Kerjan who did a fantastic job. Above Chaos was responsible for the beautiful art of the album and the responsible for the release is the French label M & O Music.
The album starts with a slow and dark background. The cool thing is that without waiting and without stopping in this quiet part, the true black metal begins. Respecting all elements of the primitive form of the genre they intermingle it with epic soundscapes and a cleaner dark metal, characterized by ferocious guitar riffs and devilish drums. It's catchy, not boring at all, what you'd expect from such a long album, it's quite the opposite. The vocalist impresses with his emotional way of singing throughout the entire work, the intonation of voice, the grunts, shrieks and screams, the passage of voice during the songs is perfect.
The level of professionalism and creativity impressed me a lot, one of the important factors in a concept album is the passage from one track to another. When listening to an album like this, there should not be a cut or interruption in any way that makes us realize that the story has stopped. The guitars are also perfect, the right riffs come always at the right time, leads are performed with mastery, the bass occupies its place with power without becoming boring or repetitive. I already commented on the perfect drums and vocals. What more to say about a masterpiece?
Sea Black is a reality that shows what real musicians are capable of doing when they really love and live the style. You will identify the influences of the band through the songs. Just to name a few, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Opeth, Mayhem and Marduk. I found some elements that are even similar to Metallica's early stuff. Sea Black for sure will occupy a prominent place among the French and as well the European black metal scene. Highly developed, Sinlust's new album Sea Black is an example how to do things right and remember that this is only their second album. Don't miss it out! One of the best concept albums made by a rather newish band which I have heard so far!
