One of the favorites from the Ukrainian black metal scene, Ulvegr, released now their third full-length album Titahion: Kaos Manifest. The album was recorded at Dark Essence Recording Studio between 2013-2014 and mixed and mastered between 2016-2017 by Astargh, known as former guitarist from Nokturnal Mortum, at same studio. The lyrics were mostly written by bands mastermind Helg and discuss ritualistic ceremony aspects, the 3rd gate of hell and how Babylonian demons are summoned.
Since its formation in 2009 by Helg (songwriting, vocals, guitar, bass) and Odalv (drums), both also members of Kzohh and Ygg, the two always invited musicians to collaborate in their works. Thus, in this album guest contributors were Astargh (lead/rhythm guitar and vocals), Hyozt (keys and samples), and Zhoth that make vocals and voices in three tracks and the lyrics in two. Ulvegr keeps the raw, fierce and atmospheric black metal as a base, but tends to always do a differentiated work.
If their previous album, The Call Of Glacial Emptiness, released in 2014, offered kind of a frozen and paralyzing atmosphere, with Titahion: Kaos Manifest the band goes with this hottest, exotic and extremely demonic atmosphere. The album possesses such an intensity and penetration that immerse you in a void of despair. The ritualistic aesthetic is best evident in "Countless Aeons In Transcendent Abyss" and "U-Tuk-Ku Lim-Nu", where we can find tribal drums and a cosmic atmosphere with deep droning tones. In the last two tracks I mentioned, wicked voices and harrowing grunts made my heart almost stop to beat. This disturbance came from these non-stop cacophonic invocations between some kind of hell servants and demonic creatures. These three tracks are musical interludes and the tribal elements, the sounds, the frightening atmosphere and the terrifying voices and whisperings, appear very well interconnected in the whole album.
“Throne Among The Void” represents the beginning of a crescent insanity that involves you in ragefully wave of fierce tremolo riffing and sweeping keyboards that brings the mystical atmosphere surrounded by a fast drum attack. The vocals, not only here, but in the entire album, terrify me. Helg and his guests have created these tortured inhuman creatures that now live under my bed. The sweeping infernal tone is repeated in all tracks, sorrowful guitar solos as in “Black Light Of A Dying Sun” gives to some tracks a beautiful unmistakably bleak melancholy. “She, Who Grants Sufferings” is my chosen track from this album, because this very song blends so well all the elements that appear here and there in the tracks. Along with "Black Light From A Dying Sun" and the mesmerizing guitar solo in there. But honestly? From the beginning to the end this album is a powerful and terrifying journey down the staircase of Hell.
