The Dallas, TX (USA) based black metal horde Tyrannosorceress just released their debut full-length album, Shattering Light's Creation, through Tofu Carnage Records. Built in a fertile terrain of doom, drone, black metal and psychedelic rock influences, Tyrannosorceress exploded with a demo in 2011. Formed by five skilled musicians from the blackest hemisphere of the underground, it couldn't be different since three of them are experienced musicians that came from the death metal band Cleric. Vocalist Zac Christian, John Schiller who plays bass, along with Zach Jobin on drums. We still have two excellent guitars in the hands of the no less talented, Billy Baxter and Daniel Hearne.
What Tyrannosorceress present us with this release? It's an album with some doom elements in the slower moments, but without any doubt this is mostly occult black metal that strikes right into your heart in an encompassed balance between melody and aggression. The quality of the black metal on this album is excellent. Without any unpleasant rough transition, these guys have the knack of playing slower mid-tempo melodic black metal and incorporate intense blasting parts with tons of tremolo picking.
"Haunting Black Infinity" is an eight-minute track that with ripping riffs grab you here and there, while finishing with a melodic solo that is quite hypnotic. Their ability to make transitions in and out of sections that have totally different cadences is superb and shows me what I should find ahead. A perfect example of the mastery of these musicians is found in my favorite track, “In The Light Of The Sabbath Moon”. This track builds up with a slow, chiming intro and stab you with a thrashy assault that ends furiously with a wicked solo guitar.
While “The Call To Chaos”, brought me a relaxing dark atmospheric vibe that took my memories to Opeth quite often during my listening, “The Nine Angels” come to me with a choice of clean tremolo, my compliments to the master who caresses this guitar. Playing distorted and clean at the same time is only for masters who give pure dedication to their passion. Other highlight I want to point is “Shattering Light’s Creation” that in a way resembles to another heavy and furious famous name, Marduk. “Senescent And Supreme” the last music in here with doom roots and clean guitars with a frenzy section conduced me to Watain.
This debut album is an impactful walk in the parking lot of hell, perfect instruments and very strong vocals, captivating and the most important, Zac knows when and how much time is needed to let the listener breath. Shattering Light’s Creation is especially built for fans of the traditional black metal mixed with a "new air" and clean production. It's mandatory to check it out.
