Norwegian old school black metal with roots in the 90s is what the band Myrholt brought to us on 14th December 2017. A self-released full-length album called Med Samme Nål, Under Samme Måne (With Same Needle, During Same Moon). The mastermind behind this solo project is Ole Alexander Myrholt, who is better known by being part of the band Those Left Behind as vocalist, guitarist, bassist and drummer, as well as being part of the bands like Mork, Archon, Diabolical Breed and Enslavement Of Beauty, just to name a few.
Nowadays, when it comes to old school black metal, it often comes to mind ... ummm, this is a dull copy of the masters of the past. But, this project earns my credit. Most of this material was written and recorded in 1992 by a teenager as young as 14! Yes, Ole Alexander himself, who fell in love with Darkthrone and their monumental second album Blaze In The Northern Sky and since then was raptured to the hordes of black metal. Many recording sessions have taken place throughout these years and have been distributed only on cassette tapes under different monikers. The best known was Tremor. This "band" closed the doors in 2011, according to Ole himself, due to lack of exclusive dedication, since he acted actively on several other bands. In December of 2016 he was inspired again when he started as a drummer in the band Mork. This way he began to launch his previous songs hidden in the "bottom of the chest" and some new ones, and his solo project received his surname, Myrholt.
Well, what you will find on this album is exactly the organic and cold sound of the gone 90s, very much inspired by Darkthrone and Burzum, beyond any shadow of a doubt. So the metalheads who were then just spermatozoa will have now an opportunity to meet a current band that represents the old school black metal sound. The sound of Myrholt is aggressive most of the time, yet with some melancholic touches as in "Lagnad", the fifth track, one of my preferred.
So you will find grim vocals, cold screams, great frostbitten riffs with a contagious melody, a good keyboards action, blast beats, the famous typical black metal tremolo picking, some cool guitar solos and strong melodic bass lines. A good amount of slow and mid paced rhythms, it's perfectly mixed and some songs are really epic and atmospheric, while the vocals which are sometimes clean give to the whole album a pagan feeling.
The lyrics are mostly a search for a better life and a better way to live it. Yes! There are many references to ancient scandinavian life codes and nature. Closing my review I want mention "Merkur", "Lagnad" and the closing one, "Ved Yggdrasils tredje rot", as my favorite tracks and say once again to you that you should support Myrholt that he'll continue with his art. I hope to review again in 2018 more gems sounding like being done in the golden age of black metal.
