To those who follow our website, more properly my reviews have heard of the talented band from Minnesota (USA) Amiensus. Surprisingly, the frontman of Amiensus, James Benson (also in Adora Vivos and Fail To Decay), started a solo project named Nòtt. In this project, "fresh out of the oven", the mixture between a bleak atmosphere and elements characteristic from the progressive black metal are distinguished. Nòtt's debut album was released on the 17th of this month and is covered in melancholy frozen to the bones, you can feel a deadly and terrifying presence in each track of this self-titled work. The album is adorned by Matt Palmer Media.
A fierce, demonic, powerful, and very heavy material. Thanks to James for his deep bass and Alex Snape from Nomadic Arts and his Herculean drum bursts, the tracks have a rather strange melody and sometimes seem to light up, but then it falls again into a dreadful desolation and James' vocals don’t stop to panic. Nòtt contains five tracks of pure atmospheric black metal madness, many killer riffs and it's excellently performed. The first track, "White. Cold. Death" shows already what you’ll find in the other tracks. Their multifaceted textures are built on a black metal foundation that slips sometimes into atmospheric progressive post metal style. Firing blast beats, relentless riffings and tempos working in a linear way and the choral in the last track "Rosa Mystica" are very pleasant to hear.
If I compare Nòtt with Amiensus, I would say that this material is more intense, but it is expected to be similar. In the last album of Amiensus, All Paths Leads To Death the atmosphere is more romanticized, more melodic and with more passionate riffs, already in this work as I said, the weight of the desolation of hell reigns supreme. It's an engaging and dynamic album and it haunts the mind after it's over and talking about ending. But I wonder why James considers this release as an album, it has a running time only around 24 minutes, the tracks could be longer or at least this album could have more tracks or at very last just being an EP. In the end I can say that Nòtt's debut is a very good album but unfortunately very short so to speak.
