In violent times, where social individualism and misanthropy reigns almost absolute, Coldawn emerges with the debut album titled ...In The Dawn. This is an interesting blackgaze album made by this international act which was born in 2013, originally formed by Ausk from Venezuela and Brendon Sibraa from Australia (Mors Voluntaria, The Plague Doctor, Vixentaunder and many others), under the name Beyond The Dawn. The band until 2015 did not record any albums or EPs, and was remaining dormant until 2016, when the name was changed with the addition of Australian multi-instrumentalist Tim Yatras (Germ, ex-Austere, ex-Woods Of Desolation) and the Russian B.M. from Skyforest. They decided to change the name to Coldawn and start their career among the black metal fronts releasing their debut album called, ...In The Dawn via Flowing Downward, the newborn sublabel of Avantgarde Music.
While listening to ...In The Dawn will come to your mind many bands such as Alcest, Deafheaven, An Autumn For Crippled Children and Drudkh, to name a few. The opening begins with "Spectral Horizon", a beautiful instrumental that emphasizes acoustic guitars, an invitation for the winter immersion of existence. In the rest of the album there's a lot of passion and melancholy, as well the band inserts some depressive moments which are not far away from dsbm, especially because of those painful shrieks. "My Escape" is very captivating, starts with kind of suffering mood and then attacks again with acoustic guitars, at this point you are already completely immersed in this universe of melancholic memories and at the same time you'll begin to feel hope. The album as a whole gives you at the same time the cold season and your feelings of hibernation and solitude and as I said before, the hope of a spring rebirth.
Coldawn on this album focused mainly on longing and airy patterns of longing. "The Essence", "...In The Dawn" and "La Primavera No Llegara Esta Vez", are very appealing tracks for me, the first two for presenting the classical piano initially, and the third, because of the very appealing female voice in Spanish which adds some additional splendour to the whole thing. "This: Over" takes me away from the suffering melancholy and pushes me out of the squeeze and fixes me on reality, and as the last track titled "My Destiny" tells me that everything is in the past that is now only a memory.
Coldawn in this debut album somehow created the perfect blackgaze formula for upcoming releases. It is music that really plunges you into the melancholy of a freezing and sometimes welcoming season, it's a truly an immersive blackgaze metal album with a lot of things waiting to be discoverd. Satisfying and beautiful from the start to finish.
