The international duo known as Kosmogyr is an effort between Xander Cheng (The Arcbane) from China and Ivan Belcic (Death To Giants, ex-The Machinery Of Other Skeletons) who lives in the Czech Republic. After two years of herculean work, these talented musicians, released the debut on 30th March via Flowing Downward. This album depincts a true perfection that despite having its roots in the 90s, presents us with a quite modern take on black metal, vigorously orchestrated with an aggressive temperament and full of vitality with melancholy, melody and atmospheric soundscapes.
Eviternity consists of nine songs that were written in an immersive way, each track is composed of subjective interpretations, with this I mean that each one will be interpreted by the listener in his/her own way. The lyrics were not imposed or composed following a pattern. With a relentless rhythm, full of extreme programmed drums and very well executed instruments, a special note must go to the throughout very solid guitar work, yet with well executed vocals that are just boiling out aggression.
"Sui Generis", the opening track, is extremely melancholic and full of feeling and the subsequent tracks are composed of moments of extravagant melody, as in the beginning of "Quiescent" or the xylophone notes that initiate "Fraility", or the acoustic guitar that appears in "Refulgence". But most of the band's nod toward the melody comes through the patterns of riffs, with their quasi-cathartic, and subtle movements. All these added vanguard elements perfectly match the moments of aggression and passion represented by a Scandinavian black metal of the '90s.
Difficult to choose favourite tracks on this album, all are particularly beautiful and the effort spent on performing Eviternity is undoubtedly noteworthy, especially if you take into account the geographical distance of the musicians. How many dawns were not spent preparing this aggressive and powerful work? Many. Thanks to these really professional musicians for bringing out one of the best albums released so far this year, as it relates to the perfect junction between the old and the new black metal.
