French gothic/doom ensemble Angellore return on 15 May with their fourth full‑length, Nocturnes, set for release through Ardua Music. Alongside the announcement, the band has unveiled the single and lyric video “Black Sun River”.
For nearly two decades, the Avignon‑based band has carved out a singular space in the gothic doom realm, blending mournful grandeur, folkloric colours, and emotive storytelling. Their past works – from Errances (2012) to the acclaimed Rien Ne Devait Mourir (2020) – have earned them a devoted following, and Nocturnes now emerges as their most ambitious and affecting chapter yet, shaped slowly over the course of ten years.
The album opens with “Falling Birds”, a sorrow‑laden piece that shifts from fragile melancholy into sweeping, powerful chords. Angellore’s trademark interplay of angelic vocals, mournful guitar lines, and evocative woodwinds immediately sets the tone for the journey ahead. The newly released “Black Sun River” follows a ghostly waltz steeped in timeless passion and spectral beauty.
Tracks like “Forsaken Fairytale” highlight the band’s vocal versatility and narrative depth, contrasting harsh expression with quiet, dignified instrumentation enriched by flute and piano. “Martyrium” summons cathedral‑like choirs and windswept atmospheres, while the closing piece “A Dormant Stream”, weaves delicate textures and majestic crescendos into a poignant finale.
Nocturnes was recorded across several studios in Iceland, Belgium, and beyond, engineered and mixed by Déhà (Inborn Suffering, Wolvennest, Cult Of Erinyes) and mastered by Markus Skroch (October Falls, Sig:Ar:Tyr, The Chasm). The cover artwork, created by guitarist Florent “Celin” Castellani, encapsulates the album’s nocturnal spirit.
Angellore once again invite listeners into a world of shadowed beauty, emotional depth, and mythic resonance — a place where sorrow becomes splendour. Link
