Canadian dark electro artist S1R1N has revealed a new video single, "Voodoo Doll".
"Voodoo Doll" is, at its core, a song about self-destruction and destructive relationships. The lyrics describe an effigy, a doll that the protagonist has created. This doll is the most precious thing in their world, as they love it with abandon, but it also becomes the target of their anger, rage and destructive behaviour. As it often is in life, people hurt those whom they love the most, and it is no different in one's relationship with themself.
The story also serves as a metaphor for the artistic process, as the journey of creation involves pouring one's heart and soul into something, encompassing all the love and positive emotions one feels, as well as all the suffering and pain. The sound palette used to create the song calls to mind a creepy yet melodic aesthetic reminiscent of horror film soundtracks.
The music video for "Voodoo Doll" was inspired by the surreal yet gritty aesthetic of '90s and early '00s music videos. It was filmed in several abandoned buildings, including the Victorian Insane Asylum and Tuberculosis Sanatorium. The symbolism of these places, alongside the imagery of dolls and the bloody white clothes worn by Morgan in the video, evokes themes of lost innocence and the corruption of the inner child. This is especially exemplified by the scenes in the video where dolls are destroyed. Both the song and video are intended as a cathartic experience for both the artist and audience.
What is S1R1N? A possessed girl living in a haunted house on the edge of a nuclear Wasteland, a place inhabited by creatures who have evolved to bend reality and manifest both nightmares and dreams. Much like the enchanted bird of folklore, Morgan's voice has the power to drive those who stray into her realm into total ecstasy, or complete madness and despair.
S1R1N (SEE-rin) is the genre-defying dark electronic project of Morgan Von Darque, an artist and DJ from Toronto, Canada. Morgan is previously known for her horror and fantasy-themed visual art, and organising local events such as Resurrection, a long-running goth/industrial club night. A classically trained singer and pianist now working with electronic music production, Morgan blends classical composition techniques with modern songwriting to create a unique sound. She is joined by Sean Beesley of Die Blind and Live Evil Productions on guitar and additional production.
S1R1N combines elements of industrial, darkwave, neoclassical and symphonic metal to weave enigmatic stories centring on dreams, visions, personal transformation and inner turmoil, often within the framework of mythology and the occult. Link
