The Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK)-based post-punk band Social Youth Cult released a new single, "Close To Nothing". The single is taken from the upcoming album, The Lighthouse, which the band will self-release on 2 November. Social Youth Cult love to cultivate the unusual. The budding group are a force to be reckoned with in the world of gothic music, both in attitude and sound.
Having shed the skin of their early darkwave-esque efforts, Social Youth Cult now command attention via a heavy, rhythmic sound reminiscent of early Bauhaus. Their new material draws upon the more experimental aspects of early northern post-punk groups while also carrying the torch of ritualistic groove inspired by the likes of Killing Joke and The Pop Group. Through this complex sound, the band refuses a firm definition – their sound is atmospheric, yet sporadic; outward, yet introspective; gothic, yet Gang Of Four.
The band's upcoming debut record is made up of eight tracks, which were recorded at the Bunker in Sunderland. The band will be launching their album at Whitby Goth Weekend this year, performing at the Crafty Cove on Sunday, 2 November. Social Youth Cult will be finishing the year strong, with several live dates across the UK. Listen now to the single "Close To Nothing". Link
