Atmospheric doom duo The Answer Lies In The Black Void unveil their haunting rendition of “Angel”, taken from the upcoming compilation The Dungeon Tapes, set for release on 28 August via Pelagic Records. The collection gathers previously unreleased material and rare cover versions from a wide range of artists across the label’s roster.
Opening Side B, the duo’s interpretation of the Massive Attack classic transforms the trip‑hop staple into a slow‑burning, doom‑laden descent. Their version retains the hypnotic pull of the original while expanding it into a vast, shadow‑soaked soundscape where ambience, electronica and crushing distortion merge into something both suffocating and strangely fragile.
Multi‑instrumentalist and composer Jason Köhnen shares the deeply personal reason behind choosing this track: “‘Angel’ is dedicated to one of my musical mentors, Carlton Franklin — an ‘old‑school’ DJ who taught me the power of musical climaxes and the hypnotic strength of darkness. In the mid‑90s he would always drop ‘Angel’ at the peak of his sets, shifting moods and moving crowds with an incredible sense of control. When he became terminally ill, a crowdfunding campaign called Dead Man Sailing was launched so he could make one final voyage across the Atlantic in his yacht. It was a powerful gesture from a man who stayed true to his character until the very end — playing with death the way he played with the audience, guiding the narrative until the night was over.”
The duo’s cover channels that same sense of tension and release. Köhnen explains: “The challenge was to preserve the hypnotic drive of the original while adding our own doomy, post‑rock‑infused climaxes. For the video, we reinterpreted the original storyline through a slightly more gothic lens, placing it in our own world. Martina stayed close to Horace Andy’s beautiful vocal lines, adapting them into her own siren‑like call.”
The Dungeon Tapes also features contributions from Psychonaut, Lost In Kiev, Pothamus, Gösta Berlings Saga, Telepathy, Spook The Horses, and a remarkable My Bloody Valentine cover performed by members of Spotlights, Rosetta, Failure, Shy Low, and Hiroe, appearing collectively as Pelagic United.
With “Angel”, The Answer Lies In The Black Void delivers a reverent yet transformative homage — a slow, immersive revelation that expands outward into something transcendental. Link
