Canada-based independent artist and music producer Aileé Zaga has just recently a brand new ethereal-dark pop single "Written In The Earth". In a world where societal expectations relentlessly dictate a woman's self-perception, Aileé Zaga's stands as a potent anthem of defiance and freedom through self-acceptance.
Aileé Zaga describes the track as, "a simple song about a complicated subject". The song brings attention to the correlation between the pillaging of Earth’s resources and the consumerism of women’s bodies. Drawing inspiration from songs like “Teardrop” by Massive Attack and “Veka” by Zola Jesus, Zaga's distinctive songwriting weaves a captivating narrative. With rich layers of cellos and violins, ethereal vocal harmonies reminiscent of ancestral chants, and organic electronic beats, she delivers a sonorous testament to the resilience of women and nature. "Written In The Earth" is a poignant call to challenge the definitions of womanhood imposed by society.
Aileé Zaga comments: “When you are out in nature and you see uneven textures, asymmetry, or the signs of the passage of time in a rock or in the trees, you call them beautiful. Yet, when you see those same things in yourself, you call them imperfections.”
The song’s lyrics are written from the perspective of an entity that embodies the collective essence of women and nature itself across time, drawing a compelling parallel between their exploitation and commodification. It's a rallying cry for self-acceptance, urging us to embrace the imperfect elements within us that mirror the beauty found in the natural world.
The making of "Written In The Earth" was marked by several serendipitous moments; an initial setback in production turned fortuitous when Zaga reached out to one of her musical inspirations, Los Angeles-based producer Alex DeGroot (Zola Jesus, Emily Jane White), ultimately resulting in a dream collaboration with the producer behind some of her favourite records. DeGroot, who additionally played guitar on the track, infused the song with his signature blend of organic and electronic sound design. Another prominent element on the track was the emotive performances by Martin Krátký on cello and Chloe Davidson on violin, engineered by Aileé Guerra Aréizaga and Eliseo Santillán. The song was mastered by engineer Chris “Hollywood” Holmes (The Matrix, Korn), whom Zaga previously worked with for her 2022 release "Goddess Of The Dawn" (you can check it over HERE).
