Déesse are another band for all those who long after the golden 80's sounds. Hailing from Zürich (Switzerland), the band with this, their second in two years, strangely entitled EP ▼, shows the great ability to create dark melancholic pop tunes. Still the band is one of those acts on todays dark music ground that doesn't bring anything new, but rather play the music with which they've grown up. Strongly influenced by 80's pop and raw punk, the band sounds like they wanted to put the vibes similar to David Bowie, Joy Division and even Chris Isaak on a new level, to give them some kind of special melancholic and dark tone.
Tender, mostly calm and mellow, but here and there very passionate guitars, often distorted, are not to be missed, just listen for example the last part of "Lost" or "Closer". Bass lines have also a prominent position. Matias knows how to seduce the listener with his emotive, but calm voice. Drums are giving that needed and desired uplift, sounding really playful in punkish "Changeless". I was impressed by some synth insertions and how it fills up the space with dark gothy atmosphere. Nice retro pop and rock melodic rhytms should bring a smile on faces of those who miss neon lamps, disco balls and wafts of mist. Though it's difficult to talk about dynamic music here, the band tried to make their musical output sounding that way and the opener "Manual" or the last one "Cormorant" are the right example. I believe that nobody will remain unimpressed with the cover version of 80's hit, the only better known song from Cutting Crew "(I Just) Died In Your Arms". They've implemented this one with special gloom, slowed it down and added even more melancholy into it than on the original version.
Production is another thing that gives to those six songs kind of vintage raw punkish sound and they did the rigth thing with it. I can best imagine Déesse playing those tracks in a romantic night bar late in the night, when the closing time is at hand and some couples are still having their last drink. ▼ is romantic, dark and enjoyable EP, still I believe that the band should work on putting a bit more of diversity and dynamics into the compositions, but at the same time this is great music, not burdened with cliches it works best as a background set.
