Nihil. - Mythos (2012) - Review

Band: Nihil.
Album: Mythos
Release date: 23 March 2012
Label: Self/Released

Nihil., a strong name has gained my attention to explore what's behind this. I found darkness and nothing else than horrific darkness. Already a second album after last years The Stillborn is something for those masochist who enjoy to live in a nightmare. The responsible person behind this one man project is Xavier, better known as a vocalist for Belgium doom death band Akem Manah and another dark ambient formation VoidWork.
"The Dreaming Dead" actually opens this album nicely with dark atmospheric neoclassical sounds that prepares you for something special yet to come, at least I hoped so, but ... The whole album it's like an unit of dark intros for metal bands. Beside the ambiental dark structures we are witnessing also some oriental vibes ("Dust Of Suleiman" and "Rituals Of Yhe") that have a lot in common with Dead Can Dance. Vocals are almost absent here, except for few samples in "In Ghastly Gloaming". Neoclassical arrangements work fine here and there, adding a special dimension and kind of perversion in the overall ambiance, also the ghastly piano tones and some strings are so morbid that you almost fell like dreaming the worst nightmare. This is not music to enjoy in it, but to suffer with. It's kind of soundtrack for a dream, when you are lost in a dungeon and then you wake up screaming. Twisted art this is, it reminded me to some bands from Cold Meat Industry who were trying to offend our existence in the past, but there was something happening, on contrary here, we can only wait, maybe on the next album...
Not for everyone. Do we need this? Why we need this? Aren't our nightmares enough. I presume that Nihil. songs were done by accident and have never been meant to be published, as Xavier had to do another project beside VoidWork just to torture us with his sick ideas. For all of you dark minded masochists out there this is free to download from Nihil. bandcamp page.
