Nigredo emerges from the depths of Greece and has now engraved its name into the monument of already rich Hellenic black metal tradition with just released debut album, Flesh Torn - Spirit Pierced, out via fast rising Indian label Transcending Obscurity Records. The band with this album built a very rich thematic duality and a combination of thrash metal with very strong and characteristic black metal influences. Even though Flesh Torn - Spirit Pierced is a debut album, the members already have their names very well carved in stone, after all we are talking about entities that have collaborated in Ravencult and are still present in scene in Deposphorus and Embrance Of Thorns.
What makes this album so appealing is the ability of these guys to merge influences from every corner of the black metal spectrum. The core of the songs is based on violent thrash metal, to this base are added other elements, such as lines of icy and tremulous guitars, stifling beats and strident and abrasive vocals with nihilistic lyrics. This mixture is still intertwined with astonishing avant-garde flavors. We can also find some sections of black'n'roll scattered here and there.
The vocals stand sharply above the instrumental allowing the threatening grunts and distressing moans to get the listener's due attention. The production that Nigredo offers is clean and compact, the guitar riffs have plenty of dissonant chords and are elaborated in every detail. My attention goes to Maelstrom who does not let the battery disappear in the middle of the restless riffs. My favorite tracks include "Choronzon Possession" which features a rather attractive black'n'roll vibe with irresistible grooves and supernatural chords.
A point worth noting and important for me is that the tracks intertwine and never become distinct and truncated, there is a very interesting continuity throughout the entire album. My other favorite track is "Mental Glimpses At Cosmic Horrors", the melodies are atonal and stab your ears without mercy and reveal a certain influence of avantgarde black metallers Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega, but yet if feels that the band grew up listening a lot to Motörhead and to 80s metal titans like Venom or Celtic Frost. Finally in "Ranging Tides Of Time", the band offers some quick atmospheric passages between the dirty aggressive riffs and the accelerated rhythmic characteristic of this album.
Flesh Torn - Spirit Pierced is a very good debut album presented by Nigredo when it comes to wedding textures. With its wild riffs permeating all the tracks, its atonal melodies and the somber and sometimes supernatural atmosphere, this album is undoubtedly a perfect and very rich violent audition. This is a must for fans of - Bolzer, Norse, Portal, Deathspell Omega, Svartidaudi, Blut Aus Nord, The Furor, Impiety,...
