Terminal Gods are one year old band from U.K. and they already got quite a lot af attention in goth and post punk fields with their demo released last year. Three guys, one girl and a drum machine are really capable to bring time back, I mean it. Listening to this three songs feels like being in 80's again and this is not a bad thing as Terminal Gods are masters in doing this job.
The Sisters Of Mercy from First And Last And Always meets The Cult albums Love or maybe Dreamtime and here you have it, but still with quite a lot of their own fresh additions in it. The guitar work is excellent, sounding a bit punkish with quite a lot of melodic and melancholic passages, on some occasions even with ties to new wave. Cowlins voice is clear, dark and deep, with a little bit of hoarse in his tone is dramatic and has nothing to hide before the biggest names of the genre. Bass lines are strong and nicely leading the tempo, together with drum machine which adds here and there also a bit of industrial accent. There is no special philosopy in creating something new, but to remember us how great was when the genre known today as a gothic rock was in it's beginnings. Also some danceable, kind of popy rhytmic sections are enjoyable, just listen to the dynamic title song "Electric Eyes" and you'll know what I'm talking about. The song with it's first beats makes you wanna bang and move, great, although I would prefer the use of real drums, what could add that little more to the dynamics, but nevertheless it's an amazing tribute to the legacy of, let's say The Sisters Of Mercy. The second one "God Child" is a little bit slower one with cultish guitar work and amazing atmospheric catchy refrain. The last one, actually bonus track "Red Light Love" follows the same path in the classic goth rock style with punk attitude. The guitarists are nicely complementing each other. No unnecessary solos, no experimentations, but only in your face thrown good old goth like it was meant to be. Everything is upgraded with rough 80's kind of production what only adds a lot to an overall perception of those three songs.
Terminal Gods are one of those few bands today, which can seduce the lovers of true goth from the past in it's unspoiled form. I'm really looking forward for their debut album and I hope it comes soon, because I believe that there are a lot of nostalgic goth rockers which will grab it like a hot cake. AF-music label did a right job with signing this magnificient band and they are showing us, also with some of other signings with bands like Aeon Sable, The Eternal Fall, Cabaret Grey, Dark Souls Day and the likes that they are becoming one of the most important labels in goth scene.
