The devilish French black metal band Corpus Diavolis is back with their third full-lenght album named Atra Lumen (Gloomy light), after their quite acclaimed Entheogenesis from 2013 and the black metal compilation album Blasphemies Of The Elder Gods, released in 2014, on which Corpus Diavolis were present with one track. Atra Lumen was recorded, mixed and mastered by Greg Chandler in Priory Recording Studios in Birmingham, UK last year.

Atra Lumen is very dark, dense with many raw and ritualistic moments, while the lyrics are mostly based on occult ceremonial magick and philosophical thoughts from the left hand path. These eight tracks are meant to summon you to the path of enlightenment. The powerful Daemonicreator's voice caused shivers on me. His voice is catalyzed by the lyrics and he knows how to penetrate deep in our mind. The compositions are mostly based on slower movements or mid-paced ones, with many harmonic guitars lines and everything is made heavier with crushing drum beats. When the musics speeds a little more it's then that we are served with a bit more raw black metal with traditional tremolo pickings and blast beats.

The tracks like "Sick Waters", "Wine Of The Beast" and "Revelations Before Dawn" are the longest ones. As the album progresses death metal influence becomes quite evident. Sometimes the sound is almost becoming closer to the doom metal style than black metal. The band nicely includes angelic voices, choirs, howls and we can also find well placed piano touches that bring quite avantgardish ambiental disarray at the end of the album. Still, the whole album has throughout this hellish and hopeless aura.

These satanic preachers have performed quite effectively on this album and we can feel the dedication of each of them in order to reach the fans of black arts with excellence. I enjoyed these songs and my favorite tracks are the speeding traditional black/death tune "Thy Glorification" and very atmospheric avantgarde black ritual named "Sick Waters". I can recommend this album to everyone who likes occult black metal inspired by ritualistic black magick.
